Jim, You could be right!! I think the track must be holding out for the return of Brian Thompson. Not enjoying the racing and hope things improve ASAP. I think you are spot on 'rufus' I know for a fact another 3 trainers have shown an interest to come on board down at the ZOO but for some unknown reason the Belle Vue Management/ Racing Office have not even contacted them either one way of the other..
It's a different approach over in Yorkshire at Sheffield they don't mess about and seem to have no trouble attracting trainers and at this time there is no shortage of greyhounds at the Owlerton Stadium...

at the very least.racing goes on.and if the management are showing b t some loyalty it is to be commended. if they start another couple of trainers for the short term, what would happen when the times get back to normal. GODS SAKE,put up with a few shortages, its not forever.and some of you moaners show some LOYALTY.

THERE IS NO NEED FOR RACES TO BE REGARDED AS SHORTAGES.THERE ARE ENOUGH TRAINERS TO BUY DOGS TO MAKE UP THE SO CALLED SHORTAGES. IF TRAINERS CANT/OR DONT WANT TO SPEND ANYTHING ON ADDITIONAL KENNEL STRENGTH,THEN THEY SHOULD BE REPLACED,HAVING SAID THAT THE TIMES ARE A CHANGING. I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR SOME TIME.DOGS ARE GOING TO GET SCARCE.AND THAT IS NOW UP ON US. HAVING SAID ALL THAT.THERE IS A VERY STRONG RUMOUR THAT BAGS ARE BEING INVESTED IN VERY HEAVILY. I WAS TOLD RECENTLY 5MILLION POUNDS ARE GOING TO BE PUT INTO BAGS RACING. I COULD SAY MORE BUT[ AS IM REGARDED AS AN IDIOT BY SOME ]I SHALL NOT TELL ALL I KNOW. SOO IF YOU CAN SHOW SOME PATIENCE [some of you]THEN THINGS COULD BE SO MUCH ROSIER IN THE FUTURE. I FOR ONE WILL BACK WITHOUT RESERVATION THE GBGBS INITIATIVES THAT ARE FORTHCOMING. T

Benny, the simple logic is that we don't have enough dogs, and even when BT comes back it won't provide the answer! I totally agree that the trainers should be given the chance to fill the void by upping their quota's - but some of them just aren't interested enough to do this, some are unable, and this still leaves us - along with other tracks throughout the country, short of dogs to race with. The trainer have had the option to up their quota's and this has failed for whatever reason(s). Management have tried to fill the trainer void by advertising and nothing is forthcoming, so where do we go from here? Suggestions are fine - we all have them, popular or not - but NOTHING positive appears to be happening, on any front!!! Where do we go from here.......ALL downhill unless trainers can be coaxed into getting more animals, or we get lucky with another decent trainer to join us (which I very much doubt). It may be OK saying it's not right for us to be down, or spreading doom and gloom, we still support the place as it's ours, as we do most trainers, they are ours - but for christ sakes let's not paint the picture rosy when it isn't, instead let's all try getting together for once "a brainstorming session may help" - but as a collective, and let's see some positive action from our side of the fence - ours being owners and trainers!! Nobody has been more positive or enthusistic than I, but even I am almost on the floor, and we haven't even got any owners & trainers do to go to this time around. For better or for worse, it's all we had as an excuse for a night out together celebrating our hounds. A sell out last time around - go figure!!

I can't understand what's going on, the track know a local trainer ( already attached to a GRA track) would be happy to join. Good kennel strength, applied before..dont know what's stopping them. No problem in getting to the track when the weather turns. Are they really happy with the Friday night cards,5 dog races, trainers with 3 dogs in races ? If the management need a clue check out any trainers based in Droylsden

TAKEN FROM THE GREYHOUND STAR WEBSITEgreyhoundstar.co.uk/a-greyhound-shortage-but-not-as-we-know-it/There is no greyhound shortage. At least not as we know it. Or at least not yet writes Floyd Amphlett. According to the experienced GBGB registrar Dave Levy, the situation is considerably more complex than it first appears. He said: “You look at places like Harlow and Wimbledon being short of runners, and even some of the BAGS tracks that are forced to rely on open races to fill their cards, there certainly appears to be a lack of greyhounds. “But that isn’t reflected in the registration figures. Go back to 2006 and we were registering around 10,100 greyhounds per year. But for the last few years, it has been pretty solid at around 7,500. “In fact, last year it was 7,300, and we are slightly above that, pro rata, for the first nine months of the year.” Levy has a number of theories as to why things are tight. He said: “It is possible that dogs are being retired earlier, though I haven’t seen any evidence from the welfare department to back that up. “Secondly, we have see the opening of Towcester which has taken well over 200 dogs out of the pool which may be affecting tracks like Wimbledon and Harlow. “There is also the issue of tracks racing only at the weekends now which means that naturally need more dogs. If they are racing Friday and Saturday, the dogs can only, in most cases, race once. “So although Harlow had an extra meeting last night (Tuesday), it won’t really affect their Friday and Saturday cards because the dogs can run again.” “At any one time there are probably 16,000-17,000 greyhounds in the system and that doesn’t appear to have changed. “One noticeable difference is the percentage of Irish breds which was traditionally around the 73/74 per cent mark. This year, with the collapse of British breeding, it will be closer to 82/83 per cent.” Interestingly, the number of trainers also appears to be holding steady. Levy said: “It is notoriously difficult to tell since some trainers will get to the end of the year and will then relinquish their licences. In the last few Calendars though, the number of new trainers has been greater than the number giving up. What isn’t clear is whether the newer trainers are smaller kennels.”
