LYCRA (AUSTRALIAN STYLE) RACING VESTS TAKEN FROM THE GREYHOUND STAR — MAY 25, 2018
GBGB has given dispensation to four racecourses (Nottingham, Romford, Sheffield and Towcester) to use the Australian style lycra racing vests in place of the traditional racing jacket.
The racing vests can include advertising in the shoulder area, in addition to type below the numeral, as approved by GBGB. A GBGB spokesperson said: “the dispensation will allow the GBGB to see how the vests perform under race conditions following successful trials at several racecourses, and to gauge any feedback during this trial period. The vests are more streamlined and secure than the traditional jacket, and due to an increased area, advertising can now be included without diminishing the overall appearance”.

OPEN RACES – SECOND HALF 2018....GBGB are pleased to include a list of Category One finals until the end of 2018 in the latest edition of the GBGB Calendar. GBGB Open Race Planning Committee Secretary Amanda Duplock said –
“It’s hugely positive that the second half of the year list is as full and varied as it is. As an open race fan I think it’s an exciting list to look at. We’ve had a brilliant Derby, there’s a great supporting card at Towcester on Saturday night and now there’s the prospect of watching all those greyhounds take each other on at tracks all over the country in many different types of races.
It’s especially reassuring that the Calendar looks as it does on the background of the uncertainty that was created by initially losing Sky coverage and then waiting to see if it could be resurrected, which has put a delay on the release of this schedule. ‘It’s likely that quite a few competition sponsorships were Sky dependent and for these competitions to still be happening is down to the work the tracks and sponsors have put in.’
It has been a much trickier process this year. Ideas that without relatively fixed Sky dates, the schedule would be easier to form, didn’t materialise. The list has been formed taking into account the many differing and sometimes new requirements of tracks, racing schedules, sponsors, and broadcasting requirements whilst trying to avoid too many overlaps and geographical clashes and trying to make the list as coherent as possible. But for the reasons above and without the structure Sky enforced and with the time constraints in place, it is not perfect. Overlaps have remained and there are a few issues that we will continue to work on. The Open Race Planning Committee’s aim for this second half schedule was to keep it coherent and structured but facilitate the staging of races wherever possible.”
As a result, we have a schedule where greyhounds can be aimed at a large number of races for the rest of the year. GBGB’s thanks go to tracks and sponsors for their co-operation and flexibility which has been essential in making the schedule work, and to owners and trainers for their patience until now and in advance. If things don’t always appear to make sense at certain points in the year, I can guarantee they will have been considered at length and the best possible solution implemented.
Overall it’s great news and hugely encouraging that even in adverse circumstances, the will to stage major events is most definitely still there.”

WEDNESDAY 6/6/18:
The Greyhound Board of Great Britain is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeremy Cooper as its new Chairman.
Cooper’s last position was as Chief Executive of the RSPCA, where he devised and implemented a five-year strategic plan. Prior to that, he was responsible for overhauling the RSPCA Freedom Food brand and relaunching it as RSPCA Assured, while turning it into a profit-making business for the first time.
Cooper said “I’m really excited to be joining the GBGB at this time and look forward to the implementation of the Greyhound Commitment. I can see that everyone at the GBGB is passionate about the sport and cares deeply about Greyhound welfare.”
GBGB Managing Director Mark Bird said “Jeremy brings a unique skill set to the Board, with experience in animal welfare, governance and for his commercial acumen. I am very much looking forward to working with him.”
Bird also thanked Robert Griffiths for acting as Chair after the previous Chair Tom Kelly retired in May last year; “Robert has helped the Board steer a steady course over the past year and we thank him for his efforts.”
The appointment will take place on 2nd July 2018.
Mr Jeremy Cooper

Latest News GBGB Veterinary Alert 07/06/2018....
Trainers are being advised to keep alert for coughing or off colour greyhounds. Coughing greyhounds must not be raced, trialled or exercised whilst they are coughing, and it is advised that 10-14 days be allowed after the coughing has stopped before starting fast exercise.
Trainers and owners are also being asked to be vigilant for signs of more severe disease, called Canine Haemorrhagic Pneumonia. The signs to look out for are sudden onset fever, panting and off-colour. Affected dogs do not always cough. The time from first signs to being life-threatening can be as short as 6-8 hours. Your local veterinary surgeon must be contacted as soon as possible since the disease is fatal without intensive emergency treatment. Please do not try to medicate these cases – only prompt and intensive therapy by a veterinary surgeon offers the best chance for recovery.
Information sheets for trainers and veterinary surgeons are available on the GBGB website.
The GBGB does monitor and investigate disease outbreaks, but this relies on timely reporting of any problems so that control procedures can be put into place as soon as possible. Trainers and owners are encouraged to report any disease problems to the GBGB in order to limit the spread of disease and to allow the gathering of as much information as possible. The GBGB will pay for laboratory investigations of respiratory disease or sudden death provided they are made aware of the problem as soon as possible. Retrospective payments are not made.
General disease advice can be from your local veterinary surgeon, or from the GBGB on 0207 822 0900 or via the Disease Surveillance Reporting line on 0207 822 0929. Your stipendiary steward should also be contacted.
