TAKEN FROM THE RACING POST WEBSITE.Blonde Snapper is the Greyhound of the Year Blonde Snapper: has been voted 2012 Greyhound of the Year BLONDE SNAPPER was last night revealed as the 2012 Greyhound of the Year at the GBGB Awards held in the Lancaster hotel in London. The now-retired October 2008 dog’s exploits in the first five months of the campaign were enough to see off numerous challengers after what was a stunning year on the track.
It was an amazing night for his connections, owner Mark Currell and trainer Mark Wallis, who were constantly called to the stage to pick up trophy after trophy. Indeed, the biggest threat to Blonde Snapper came from their own Blonde Reagan, who pushed him all the way in Greyhound of the Year voting having himself won the Stayer and Marathon categories. However, Blonde Snapper’s hard-earned success in the Standard division, where he shaded fellow dual Category One winners Loughteen Blanco and Mags Gamble, ultimately saw him home after what was widely considered a vintage year for four-bend racing. Blonde Snapper came into 2012 on the back of a successful campaign the previous year, highlighted by victory in the williamhill.com Classic at Sunderland despite connections handling him with care after long-standing injury problems which at one stage threatened his career.
His first appearance of the year came in the heats of a minor 400m competition at Romford on February 22 where he just held off Droopys Bach. The benefit of that outing became apparent four days later when he beat the same rival with a lot more to spare. Two further appearances at Romford yielded another victory and a somewhat unfortunate defeat before he scored comfortably at Henlow.
Representing Wallis at the Betfair Trainers’ Championship in March, he could only manage fifth – his only finish out of the first three in his 16 races in 2012 – behind his Greyhound of the Year predecessor Taylors Sky, although that formline would be clearly reversed later in the year when it mattered most at Wimbledon.
Returning to Romford, he was short-headed by 2011 Sprinter of the Year Drumcove Lad, but then enjoyed a successful campaign in the Category One Millennium Stand Bookmakers Golden Sprint as he won his heat and then reversed a semi-final defeat at the hands of Fancy Socks, catching her at the third bend in the final.
The glorious swansong to his career was to come at Wimbledon in the £125,000 williamhill.com Derby, An impressive first round victory over Farloe Iceman was followed by safe qualification behind Boher Paddy, Coolavanny Bert and Droopys Jet to take him into the semi-final, where he gamely collared trailblazing Droopys Loner and then just held off reigning champion Taylors Sky for victory. In the final on May 26 he was sent off an 8-1 chance, but was always prominent and gamely rode first bend crowding to take command, going on to beat heavily supported favourite Farloe Ironman by just under two lengths in 28.65sec.
Currell then took time to deliberate whether to continue racing Blonde Snapper, but decided the best way to end his career was at the very top.

THE £3,000 Stadium Bookmakers National Sprint final was the highlight at Nottingham on Monday night and the two-bend classic was won by Jumeirah Dubai (4-6F). Beaten out of the boxes by Comeragh King, Julie Calvert's black showed serious pace up and drove the first bend far better and opened up a winning lead before turning for home. June McCombe's Kilmalady Fox ran another gallant race in defeat to chase home the winner who scored by one length in 17.71sec.
