Alan Shearer: part of a ten-man syndicate with trainer Harry Williams.
Soccer legend Shearer join Williams' syndicate
NORTH-EAST football legend Alan Shearer is the latest soccer celebrity to become involved in greyhound ownership as part of a ten-man syndicate with Newcastle trainer Harry Williams.
Shearer has a share of recent Irish recruit Shearers Diamond, who was four from four over Newbridge’s 525 yards in Ireland where he was known as Pennys Messi and signed off when landing a final there on December 7.
Williams, recipient of the GWA Services to the Industry accolade at last month’s GBGB Awards, said yesterday: “We got the dog from a good friend of mine, Eugene Price, and he looks to have plenty of potential.
“He took a while to settle in and I’ve done very little with him during the grotty weather. He’s due to have his second trial at Newcastle on Wednesday over 480m and against Hadrians Wall – who is another dog I think a lot of.
“Hadrians Wall beat him a length first time round, picking him up on the run-in.
“The thing I like about the new dog is that he has a nice turn of early speed and I’d be disappointed if he didn’t turn out to be half-decent.”
With regards to having Shearer in the kennel as an owner, Williams added: “Of course it can only be good for the sport to have such people advocating the pleasure of ownership.
“I’ve known Alan for some time, having been involved in horseracing syndicates with him and Terry McDermott among others. He’s a very nice guy and is one of ten members of the Diamond Lads syndicate, which is named after a certain north-east watering hole that the lads have been known to frequent!”
