Belle Vue's bookmakers have invoked a Rule 4 situation Belle Vue 'case proven' for Rule 4 concept By Jim Cremin 4:20PM 6 MAY 2013 via RACING POST.COM SIMON WALMSLEY, a leading Belle Vue bookmaker and behind the introduction of a Rule 4 concept there and at other GRA tracks, yesterday claimed that the first serious application of the rule at a Saturday meeting last month made it case proven.
“The race where we really first had cause to try out our newly introduced rule was the 9.50pm race on April 20, where Clonteen Cookie was returned 10-11.
“In the race this greyhound had originally been 5-4, but the six-dog was withdrawn very late - it was around 4-1 - and we had a deduction of 10p in the pound.
“Betting carried on, all we had to do is rub the prices, take out the non-runner and price up the new market. Anyone backing the withdrawn dog was given a refund and all other bets stood.
“The racecourse announcer, Steve Smith, gave expert advice as to the new procedure over the public address and later informed the winning punters what the procedure was for the deductions to their winnings.
“This made the whole process seamless and could not have worked better. It meant we did not have the task of voiding 65 bets and then seeking to get them all back on at the new price.”
The problem before had been that punters – some of whom are novices or used to the Rule 4 at horseracing – had no idea of the greyhound procedure and that all bets previously were deemed void.
They were sometimes coming up after the race, believing they were on a winner, only to be told all they had due was their stake money.
Walmsley added: “I can’t thank everyone enough who helped put together this new process, it’s a definite positive step in customer relations.”

It sounds like a great idea, but to be honest let's hope it's not needed to often down at Belle Vue.

SATURDAY 27-7-13
THE RULE 4 CAME INTO OPERATION LAST NIGHT AT THE ZOO WHEN IN RACE 3 THE JOY ANDREWS TRAINED BOWTIME HENRY WAS WITHDRAWN WHILST ON PARADE, RESULTING IN HIM BEING A NON-RUNNER ON VET'S ADVICE LEAVING IT A 5 DOG RACE WITH TRAP 6 BEING VACANT.
BY ALL ACCOUNTS THE NEW SYSTEM WORKED VERY WELL.

The SP guy didn't think so.
Following the withdrawal Steve Smith said that the market would reform which it did briefly. Then he said that all bets with the bookmakers prior to the withdrawal would be subject to a 10% deduction following which most books wiped off their prices apart from the Walmsley Brothers who continued to show their new prices. Close to the off someone backed the favourite and the price was rubbed leaving no price at the off.
The SP guy told me that he needed to send off the new market and not the old market subject to the deduction.
I'm sure the new arrangements suited the bookmakers since they didn't have to re-fund the bets already taken and it surely speeded up the time taken to run the race.

I have bumped up this old informative thread just to remind a few people about what can happen when a dog is withdrawn late down at the ZOO.
Here's hoping there is no need for this action to be taken by our on trackside-bookmakers in the coming months ahead
