Ballymac Eske: romped to a storming win in the Scottish Derby Eske demolishes rivals with seven lengths win GREYHOUND racing has its own Frankel judged on the demolition that Ballymac Eske handed out to his rivals in the final of the Ladbrokes Scottish Derby, Scotland’s feature race of the year and shown live Saturday night on RPGTV.
Trained by Barrie Draper for Wendy Prince and Peter Band, Ballymac Eske blasted clear from trap one and those who had taken a generous opening 4-6 show in Shawfield’s ring (returned 4-7F) were cheering. It was race over. He won by seven lengths in 28.75sec, nine spots off the track record.
Greenwell Mentor showed excellent early and turned second, before tiring coming home and Mags Gamble (crowded early) plugged on to be runner-up and land the each-way money. Irish challenger Tarbrook Tornado appeared to be going well before getting stopped in his tracks at the third turn. Teejays Bluehawk failed to get the clear first bend path that he did in the heats, but stayed on for fourth.
Draper afterwards confirmed the Racing Post Juvenile winner is Wimbledon-bound, and is also a triple crown contender. He is now showing the early pace that suggests that dream is possible. This is a true champion and he was cheered to the drafters by the appreciative Glasgow crowd.
Earlier Fire Height Spec (4-5F) made all for a comfortable win for the Drapers in the RPGTV 500 final and is William Hill-Derby bound too.
Trap one also proved the edge for 10-1 chance Clonmoyle Bob in the final of the RPGTV Stayers final. In an unusually messy race (Romeo Alliance was disqualified for fighting), Clonmoyle Bob, trained near Lanark by George Stark, was the fortunate beneficiary.
Paradise Martini was soon clear for Craig Dawson in the supporting 480m open, clocking 29.00sec
Stirling-based John McLachlan had a night to remember when training three of the first four winners on the card – all members of the same March 11 litter by Hondo Black out of Delois. A fourth, Nadurra Cairter, then landed the £500 Owners Bonus Series handicap final.
