Owen Coyle new Wigan managerWigan are to appoint former Bolton manager Owen Coyle as Roberto Martinez's replacement, the club's owner Dave Whelan has confirmed. Coyle, dismissed at The Reebok after a difficult start to life in The Championship following Bolton's relegation, will get the chance to re-invigorate what was once considered a flourishing coaching career. The 46-year-old shone in posts at St Johnstone and Burnley, who he led into the Premier League, before an encouraging start at Bolton turned sour. At one point, Coyle was regularly being touted as a future manager of some of English football's stellar clubs including Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton. But after leading Bolton to the FA Cup semi-final in 2011, the club suffered a downward spiral culminating in relegation a year later. Coyle left the club in October last year, but Whelan clearly sees the potential of a manager whose footballing philosophy should ensure a smooth transition following Martinez. At Burnley, Coyle was noted for his purist style of football - something he struggled to replicate given the players at his disposal at Bolton, where the club had a more direct style embedded. It is believed Coyle has been preferred to both Steve McClaren and former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen for the Wigan post. Confirming an agreement with Coyle, Wigan owner Whelan said: "If anyone can get us back to the Premier League, I think Owen is the manager to do it." Wigan midfielder James Mcarthur has welcomed the appointment on his Twitter page: "Happy with the new appointment in Owen Coyle, another Scot. Hopefully everyone can get behind him and the team for new season," he said. Martinez quit Wigan last week after four years at the DW Stadium in order to replace David Moyes at Everton.

If it boiled down to a choice between Owen Coyle and Steve Maclaren, i'd go Coyle every time. I'm surprised he didnt give one of the Utd guys a chance who were linked with the job, either Phelan or Meulensteen
