Airlie Impact new 5-2 favourite for the Betfred Select



DROOPYS PRIDE, called into the Betfred Select Stakes field earlier in the day as a replacement for Sawpit Sensation, is 7-2 with the sponsor for Tuesday’s £7,500 feature after an impressive victory over the race’s 500m trip at Nottingham on Monday.

Elaine Parker’s dog, runner-up to Pinpoint Maxi in the Sunderland Classic last week, shrugged off the lack of previous course knowledge to lead at the first bend and went on to beat Glenpadden Post by two lengths in 29.69sec (+20).

Parker, who was previously represented in the Select Stakes by Russanda Tux in 2006, said of Droopys Pride yesterday: “He’s really come to himself in the past few weeks and I think he’ll improve for that run as he definitely lost ground on the bends by moving off.

“Sunderland wouldn’t probably be his ideal track so it was a fantastic effort to finish where he did there in such a good field but I’ve thought for a while now that Nottingham would suit him.

“We were patient with him earlier in the year when he wasn’t quite right and hopefully we’re seeing the benefit of that now. Either trap one or two will be fine for him although I suppose it might be an advantage to be drawn inside the other railer [Daddy Knowsbest].”

Carol Weatherall’s Derby Invitation winner Holdem Spy was the last of the Select Stakes hopefuls to complete his preparation on Tuesday when he posted 29.86sec (normal) in a 500m solo trial before Nottingham’s Bags meeting.

On Monday, Musical Gaga, Dean Childs’s Dorando Marathon winner, clocked 44.75sec (normal) in a 730m solo ahead of the Betfred Select Stayers Stakes which supports the Select and closes to entries at 11am tomorrow. The fastest time of the year to date is 44.70sec by Freedom Cache on June 10.

Calzaghe Lilly, Ted Soppitt’s Sunderland Grand Prix dead-heater, posted a very smart 29.81sec over 500m while fellow potential Select Stayers contenders Dural Bound (Maxine Locke) and Afew Dollarsmore (Chris Allsopp) covered the 305m course in 18.11sec and 18.14sec respectively.

The trap draws for both the Select Stakes and Select Stayers Stakes will be made live on Betfredtv at 11.15 on Friday morning.

Nottingham hosts the Betfred Select Stakes tonight
 



Spy will take some holding in Select Stakes

 

HOLDEM SPY can come out on top in a fascinating £7,500 ­Betfred Select Stakes over 500m at Nottingham tonight (9.19, live on Sky Sports 3/SIS) where cases can be made for all six of the field.

Carol Weatherall’s dog is one of the most exciting to watch in training with a trademark burst from bends two to three that few can live with – even Ballymac Eske on this card last year was closed down a little along the back stretch – and if the selection can negotiate the first couple of turns unscathed he will be very hard to hold.

The prospects of him doing that look reasonable as the make-up of the race suggests that inside duo Daddy Knowsbest and Droopys Pride could have a ­coming together, as could wideboys Airlie Impact and Screen Critic.

Hather George, who could hardly be more closely matched with Holdem Spy having been short-headed by him in the Derby Invitation at Wimbledon last month, rates the main danger as Charlie Lister bids for a fourth successive victory in the race and sixth in total.

The Three Steps To Victory champion has a fast break in him and is a potential leader as a result. Even allowing for him being caught by the selection at Wimbledon, it will still take a huge effort to pick him up should he get an early advantage.

Screen Critic loves trap six and is clearly a big player as a result although there is a nagging doubt about how much his Derby campaign took out of him, while the admirable Airlie Impact would be a deserving winner after his Wimbledon heroics and last week’s 5.11sec trial sectional bodes well even if the prospect of him turning right into Screen Critic immediately does not.

Had Droopys Pride pulled trap one inside Daddy Knowsbest then there may well have been a compelling case to be made for him especially with ­obvious scope for improvement on last week’s first look round but the draw in two is undoubtedly tricky, while stamina could be the issue for Daddy Knowsbest even if he is potentially the main beneficiary should the stronger runners crowd.

The supporting £2,500 ­Betfred Select Stayers Stakes over 730m at 9.04 is a brilliant feature in itself with Farloe Tango a fascinating ­imponderable.

Charlie Lister’s dog clearly has the ability to be the top stayer in training but there is no ­disguising the fact he has had issues here in the past, ­admittedly in solo trials when perhaps not at the peak of his game as he is now, so he is a somewhat risky proposition at the price.

Calzaghe Lilly should come out on top in her rematch with fellow Sunderland Grand Prix dead-heater Hometown Honey, while Musical Gaga is a massive runner too but Maxine Locke’s Dural Bound is suggested as the value shout courtesy of a cracking inside draw.

He did not get the run of the race in the Sunderland final but enjoyed a good campaign there all the same and should be far better suited by this venue, something that does not seem to have been reflected in his price.

Other Nottingham Sky fancies are Barrie Draper’s Ballymac Murph (7.34), Harry ­Williams’s Hadrians Wall (7.49), Andy Clarke’s Teena Marina (8.04), Jim Watts’s Droopys Diop (8.19), Charlie Lister’s Lemon Pluto (8.34) and David Pruhs’s Sion Caviar (8.49), while Chris Allsopp’s Laoises First looks good in the SIS-covered Betfred.com Puppy Maiden Standard final over 500m at 7.19.

There are also six opens on Sheffield’s evening Bags card with Barrie Draper’s Ballymac Arkle expected to arrest a losing run of four when he goes in the first, a 500m contest at 7.42, which represents an easier opportunity than of late.

Craig Dawson’s Wells Honour relished the return to sprint at Sunderland on UK Festival night and can go in again in the 7.58 over 280m, while other fancies are Draper’s Kowloon Conner (8.13), Elaine Parker’s Candlelight King (8.28), Pat Rosney’s Knocknacree Ash (8.43) and George Oswald’s Farloe Calamity (8.58).

Connections of William Hill Derby champion Sidaz Jack will receive the June Greyhound of the Month award during tonight’s Nottingham meeting.

Select thriller with a historic first dead-heat



HISTORY was made at Nottingham last night when Daddy Knowsbest and Holdem Spy could not be separated in the Betfred Select Stakes bringing the first dead-heat in the 62-years history of the race.

The Chris Allsopp-trained Daddy Knowsbest led for much of the journey but Carol Weatherall’s Holdem Spy loomed up off the last bend and the pair were locked together at the 500m finish.

As the delay announcing the result grew longer, a dead-heat seemed more and more inevitable and so it proved with the judge ruling the duo had crossed the line together in 29.67sec with Hather George third, Airlie Impact a never-nearer fourth and then Droopys Pride and Screen Critic.

Connections of both dead-heaters seemed pleased with the eventual outcome with Chris Allsopp saying: “That’s fantastic, a dead-heat in the Select Stakes. To win the race, even sharing it, is a dream come true and this dog has got better and better each week.”

Carol Weatherall said: “It was so exciting but it seemed so long before they announced the result. As they crossed the line, I thought perhaps he’d just done it but was really hoping we hadn’t got pipped in another close photo [Holdem Spy missed out on a place in the Derby final by a short-head to Screen Critic].”

Remarkably, it was a second major race dead-head on Sky in less than two weeks after Calzaghe Lilly and Hometown Honey shared the William Hill Grand Prix title at Sunderland.

That duo were in action in the Betfred Select Stayers Stakes over 730m, finishing second and sixth respectively behind the Dean Childs-trained Musical Gaga with Dean Childs’s bitch slipstreaming Afew Dollarsmore for much of the journey before asserting approaching the final bend for a three lengths plus win in 44.61sec.

Racing got off to an explosive start when Pat Rosney’s Bower Stone set a new 480m track record as he ran away with the puppy open, making all for a ten lengths win over favourite Ballymac Murph in 28.25sec which is an improvement of six spots on the previous best set by Diesel Blue in January.
