Hill set to peak early in National heats tonight

WALSHES HILL can set an early standard in the event by seeing off some classy rivals to land the opening heat of the Stadium Bookmakers National Sprint Trophy over 305m at Nottingham tonigth (8.04, live on SIS).

Jimmy Wright’s charge has had his injury issues this year but boasts 18 victories in 23 British starts and this is a tremendous opportunity to land the big competition his talent deserves.

Scurry winner Brogan Tee Bone could move off from two giving Coolavanny Grace a brilliant draw but an on-song Walshes Hill can soon be away and gone in any case with Vanayamzaman taken to chase him home.

Target Harris, runner-up to Geelo Vegas last year, has been running over four bends lately but did win on his last sprint appearance at this venue and Hayley Keightley’s dog can take heat two at 8.19.

Inconsistency at the start has held him back but he broke well when going on to short-head Ballybee Brewery over the course and distance on that October appearance and a similar break will make him tough to beat even with Golden Sprint heroine You Never Listen in opposition.

The aforementioned Ballybee Bewery has eight wins in his last ten starts and Liz McNair’s dog can further enhance that record by claiming the scalp of exciting Scolari Sound in heat three at 8.36.

Trap one may not be conducive to a fast break for that youngster whereas the selection is generally pretty reliable in that regard and can get first run as a result.

Peter Wood’s Daytime Flyer, the Festival Flyer champion, can confirm Sunderland supremacy over Riverside Gold in the finale at 9.22 where Laughing Gravy clearly also has to be respected.

Heat four at 8.52 is not the strongest and Tony Taylor’s Stellars Avenger is worth chancing on the basis he has a fast break in him, while Dave Puddy’s speedy Comrades All appeals as the best bet of the night in heat five at 9.07 with the benefit of a look round on November 24 under his belt.

First of the evening’s opens is the Stadium Bookmakers Maiden Puppy final over 480m at 7.48 in which Carl Perry’s Geelo Speedy gets the vote on the draw.

He may have been a shade unfortunate to go down by three-parts of a length to trackmate Soberano Girl in the fastest of last week’s heats as he was crowded when challenging at the third, but a better run may be on the cards from trap one.

There are also two opens after the Bags section of the card with the suggestions being Dave Firmager’s Fabulous Black (9.52) and David Pruhs’s Fit Right (10.07).
