TAKEN FROM THE RACING POSTShawfield (above) and Pelaw Grange are two tracks keen on 'permits' GBGB agrees to new 'permit' licence schemeBY JONATHAN KAY OF THE RACING POSTTHE GBGB has sanctioned the return of a permit-type scheme, with Thursday's board meeting approving the introduction of a new owner-trainer licence.
“The GBGB today agreed to support an initiative to create a newly recognised Owner Trainer Licence,” said a short statement.
“Broadly speaking, this type of licence will allow an owner who wishes to train no more than two of their own racing greyhounds to race at licensed GBGB tracks without the need for residential kennelling provisions and inspection.
“The relevant processes and procedures required in order to facilitate the new licence are being developed to enable the new licences to be issued as soon as practicable.”
A number of non-Bags tracks had been pushing for such a scheme – Pelaw Grange and Shawfield this week reported fielding numerous inquiries from people wishing to train greyhounds from their homes.
A decision on the fate of the Derby was not on the Thursday board agenda.

GBGB Press Statement – Practitioner Directors
GBGB Practitioner Directors
The GBGB Nominations Committee made its recommendations regarding Practitioner Directors at the meeting of the Main Board yesterday. Trainer
The Committee reported that only one nomination had been received for the role of Practitioner Director to represent Professional Trainers. Peter Harnden who is attached to Nottingham was nominated by Pat Rosney and Laurence Tuffin and was supported by other leading professional trainers.
The Committee discussed whether the nomination process should be re-opened. However, after noting that every Professional Trainer had been given the opportunity to apply but had not, and into taking account of the quality of the application, the Committee recommended that Peter Harnden’s nomination should be accepted by the Board.
The Board accepted the nomination and Peter will join the Board at its scheduled meeting on 23rd March.
GBGB Chairman Tom Kelly who also chairs the Nominations Committee said, ‘While it was a little disappointing to receive just one nomination, Peter’s application was first class and we are convinced that he will make a major contribution to the work of the Board and champion the cause of trainers throughout the country.’
Peter Harnden said, ’It is an honour and privilege to be given a chance in this position. You can be assured I will give this 100% to help create a better future for all my fellow trainers. Owner
The Nominations Committee reported that there had been an exceptional response to the call for nominations for the role of Practitioner Directors for Owners.
The ten nominations that had been received were of a high quality and the Committee recommended that six of the applicants should be invited to meet the Nominations Committee who would then recommend three of them to the 23rd March Board meeting.
A vote for GBGB registered owners would then be held, as originally planned, which would enable the successful applicant to take his / her seat on the Board at the 18th May meeting..

‘PERMIT’ JUST THE TONIC FOR PELAW
The new owner trainer licence, commonly known as the ‘permit’ launches on Friday, not a day too soon for Pelaw Grange promoter Jeff McKenna.
The Durham venue lost another trainer to Sunderland this week and the kennel strength dipped to 150, some 40 short of the ideal. But that could all be resolved in the next month as the new licence holders send out their first runners.
McKenna said: “We have had 20 plus applications and I think GBGB have probably received around 15 already. It won’t be quite as simple as two dogs for every trainer giving us our exact number, but hopefully it won’t be far away.”
GBGB rules mean that none of the new licences become live until Friday and none of the greyhounds handled by the new owner trainers can be registered until they have been in the kennels of the new trainers for a minimum of seven days. But given they will only need to trial twice, or once if they are already qualified, the end of the tunnel is in sight.”
McKenna said: “It is more than just the dogs. The greyhounds become part of the family an the next generation of kids grow up and want a dog around the home. Given time, I can imagine more and more people taking to the idea. It is just what is needed.”
