Ice On Fire made it 11-in-a-row at Sheffield on Saturday


Ice On Fire battles to RPGTV Juvenile triumph



ICE ON FIRE picked straight up from where he left off in 2019, making it 11-wins-in-a-row as the Greyhound of the Year lifted the £5,000 RPGTV Juvenile over 500m at a rain and wind-swept Sheffield on Saturday.

The heavy rain had eased before the feature and Ice On Fire duly bounced out in front from trap one. Trained by Jimmy Fenwick for Dave Spraggon, he made all although was given a proper race by fellow Newcastle trackmate Waikiki Lad.

The latter ran a cracker, considering he was crowded from trap two as Ice on Fire [trap one] moved off early. Waikii Lad then kept on throughout, only failing by a half a length to get to the 29.21sec winner

Headford Ranger also ran particularly well in his first race at Sheffield for Kevin Hutton, finishing fast to be third after a very slow start. He was just over a further three lengths third.

The others all bunched at the first bend.

Fenwick said afterwards: “We’ve had kennel sickness so it was a massive relief when we went to his kennel this morning - and he was bouncing with excitement. He’s a dog who does love and need his racing. He bulleted out but Ted’s dog ran really well. Ours has a will to win and is hard to pick up in front.”

Spraggon said: "No question, it was a proper race and Ted Soppitt’s dog ran a blinder. We’ll now have to see how he comes out of it and talk it over - we’re looking at coming back here next week for the [RPGTV] Steel City Cup. Of course the Derby is his main target. This is the best looking dog I have seen in my 45 years-plus in this game. He can run too!”

Dave Perry, Sheffield’s Venue Director, said: “Ice On Fire ran an excellent race on a testing track. He’s great for the sport.”

Sandra Gilmartin of Paddy Power, Coventry, the reigning Racing Post/SIS Manager of the Year, made the presentation. She said: “He’s a gorgeous dog who has makes such brilliant starts. He is a true Derby dog - my customers all know exactly who Ice On Fire is. That can only be good for greyhound racing.”
