DROOPYS VERVE produced a brilliant performance to put down a huge marker for the competition with a best-of-round win in heat two of the RPGTV Steel City Cup on Saturday over 500m at Sheffield.

Angela Harrison's dog had been forced to work hard for victory on his seasonal debut at the track seven days earlier but turned this contest into a procession.

Last year's Derby runner-up quickly took charge by clearing Ballymac Miscula and went on to beat Down To The Felt by just under four lengths in 28.69sec.

That time was all but matched by Sean Parker's Lightfoot King in heat four as he went just one spot slower as he comprehensively outstayed defending champion Roxholme Nidge.

The winner pinged but was then beaten for early by Roxholme Nidge only to keep the leader in his sights and go on again at three-quarters for a three lengths plus victory.

Roxholme Nidge's trainer, Hayley Keightley, went one better in heat five where her Roxholme Jim forced himself round in front at the first bend and kept on well to beat Droopys Expert by two lengths in 28.98sec with Racing Post Juvenile winner Seaglass Phantom eliminated after a troubled run.

Droopys Wild, at 8-1 the outsider of the field, took the opening heat for Barrie Draper as he went from the front and dug in to repel all challengers in 29.10sec, conversely Kevin Boon's Swan Style collared long-time leader Ballymartin Hero close home to take heat three in 28.93sec.

Sue Watson's Swift Jim, backed from a morning 14-1 into 5-1, landed some decent bets in heat six as he recorded 29.19sec.

LIGHTFOOT KING gave another top class performance as he turned over Droopys Verve to land the third semi-final of the RPGTV Steel City Cup over 500m at Sheffield.

Sean Parker’s dog once again pinged whereas his chief rival was flat-footed from trap one and it was basically race over when he went round in front.

Droopys Verve did well to come through to claim the second qualifying position but could get no closer than four and a half lengths behind the 28.80sec winner.

Trade Fudge showed the benefit of his first look round the track in the heats when making all in the opener for Dan Brabon to beat Roxholme Jim by two and a half lengths in 29.01sec.

Angela Harrison’s Droopys Expert chased down reigning champion Roxholme Nidge in the second semi, shrugging off a bump close home to score in 29.27sec with Lemon Ronald just missing out in third.
