The build up for the world's greatest race is now under wayDerby starts to take shape ahead of March 31 closing date.....GRAHAM HOLLAND’s race duo of Clonbrien Prince (2nd) and Lenson Blinder (4th) will be all the better for Derby Trial Stakes experience after tasting defeat in races at Nottingham on Monday.
Clonbrien Prince moved off at the first as Jim Hayton’s Strides Farran made all in 29.82sec.
Lenson Blinder later found trouble at the first and third behind Gary Ferguson’s Knockboy Jet, backed from 5-1 into 3s as he blasted clear to open his account, though drifted wide at the last before holding Amka Rofe by half a length in 29.81sec.
Ferguson initiated a double when his Brinkleys Kid flew out to make all in a 480m maiden (28.73sec) where odds-on debutant Deanridge Sirius found trouble.
Fastest in races over the Derby trip was Barry Denby’s local Upton Legend, who led at the first to clock 29.46sec.
Ken Humphreys’ Master Reed prevailed by a short-head (29.67sec) in the finale, leading at the fourth in a bunched finish with Ferguson’s Pennylane Fionn (led half to four) and Paul Meek’s favourite Emers Cookie (led to half). Unfortunately Savva Roberts’ Highclere Titan broke down at the first bend.
There was a double for Heather Dimmock with Open Check nap Stardom over 680m (led third) and 25-1 rank outsider Lasting Legend (made all, 480m maiden, 28.82sec).
Colin Handford’s Ballymac Conte (2-1 into 6-4 in the sprint) was a shrewd winning nap when breaking in front for RPGTV studio guest, trainer Luke Morrison
*In trials before racing, Holland’s Lenson Bocko, the Irish Derby champion and Ireland’s Dog of the Year, ran a 500m solo in 29.50sec. He moved off at the first after going up in an eye-catching 4.96sec and is 12-1 second favourite with Star Sports behind 9-1 market leader Ice On Fire
Lenson Austin, a Night of Stars 575 winner for Holland, powered round in a fastest 29.29sec solo spin.
Another strong-running performer, Sharon Thompson’s Sparta Master, clocked 29.47sec when seeing off Liberty Hawk by two lengths.
Drahbeg Dash recorded 29.70sec for Gerry Ballentine when easily accounting for Eureka Creek, while Romeo Rumble went one spot slower to beat Derrygrath Nick by two and half lengths.
Kevin Proctor’s recent Central Park winner Front Asset recorded 28.89sec in a solo over 480m – expected triallist here Roxholme Jim was off-colour – while Robert Holt’s Select Stakes winner Trickys Dumbo continued to blow away the cobwebs with a 17.71sec sprint over 305m.
*The Star Sports, Arc and LPS Derby closes to entries at 3pm Tuesday March 31. The first round is Friday 10 - Saturday 11 April. The final is Saturday May 16.
Star Sports bet: 9 Ice On Fire, 12 Lenson Bocko, 25 Ballymac Cooper, Boylesports King, 28 Newinn Taylor, 33 Ballymac Anton, Ballymac Arminta, Trickys Dumbo, 40-1 bar
