Sirius proves support well-founded at Nottingham
DEANRIDGE SIRIUS as big as 66-1 earlier in the day was cut into 25-1 in places for the Star Sports, Arc & LPS Derby after opening his British account in style in a hot trial stakes over 500m at Nottingham on Monday, writes Jonathan Kay.
Allison Kelly-Pilgrim's dog, third in the Juvenile Derby at Shelbourne last year, was well-backed into 6-4 favourite as Irish Derby runner-up Boylesports King, in particular, proved weak and the support proved well-founded.
He broke well from three, cleared Emers Cookie to lead at the first bend then opened up in style along the back as he went on to beat that rival by almost five lengths in 29.51sec with Sparta Master a short-head away third.
Boylesports King was slowly away and lost ground on the bends, particularly the third, before staying on late in fifth.
Dean Childs's Droopys Cannon got the better of Juvenile runner-up Waikiki Lad, who got hooked up in a speed battle with Liberty Hawk, when showing fine back straight pace himself before leading on the run-in to score in 30.09sec.
Kevin Boon's Smiling Charlie landed a minor touch in the first trial stakes of the evening when justifying support from 20-1 into 12-1 in good style.
Odds-on Vatican Saab had led into the back straight but July 2018 youngster Smiling Charlie powered from bends two to three, asserted at that point and drew clear to win by more than three lengths in 29.98sec.
Vatican Saab’s trainer Pat Rosney went one better when Laurels second Bower Luke easily landed the odds in 29.78sec.
Gary Ferguson's Knockboy Jet followed up a trial stakes victory a week earlier when going from the front in 30.03sec, while the final trial stakes went to Paula Timmins’ local Hour Glass Kodi in 29.97sec.
In trials before racing, Steven Anderson's multiple big-race finalist Bramble Reggie was fastest of those to go over 500m when clocking 29.68sec (+40) in a solo workout.
“He's been going great at Newcastle including getting inside the sprint track record in a trial,” said Anderson, “but he'll definitely come on for that. He needed the little break he's had and everything is geared to the Derby.”
With rain getting heavier and likely slowing conditions, Gary Ferguson's Zeno impressed with a 28.58sec (+30) effort over 480m, while Chris Akers' Gymstar Elusive, second to Newinn Session in Clonmel's big unraced final last month, clocked 17.85sec (+10) over 305m to outshine Trickys Dumbo (18.07sec).
