A DOUBLE from Kevin Hutton spiced Monmore’s Saturday action with perhaps the greatest excitement unexpectedly focusing on another startling win by his unbeaten youngster Signet Ace in the supporting Ladbrokes Puppy 480m heats.
The September 18 whelp has won all his three starts and this handsome black was particularly impressive the way he flew from the traps and then immediately shot clear to a 4.31sec sectional. It proved a near seven lengths romp in 28.02sec.
He takes a rails to middle course and, after his appearance in next Saturday's £500 decider, will turn two years of age and presumably Nottingham’s Derby beckons. This is definitely a dog to follow.
Main interest of course came with the semi-finals of both the Ladbrokes Gold Cup (480m) and Stayers Classic (630m).
The winning sequence of Bockos Doomie came to a stop at nine as he went out of the 480m event when third to fast up pair Hiya Boyo and Bockos Boss, trained by Hayley Keightley and Kevin Boon respectively. Hiya Boyo is clearly approaching his peak, winning by over three lengths in a quickest 27.91sec.
Team McNair’s Queen Jessiej ran a beautiful first bend to emerge well clear down the back, taking the opening semi from Julie Bateson’s Gonzo by four lengths in 27.97sec.
Ernie Gaskin’s Droopys Addition then made all in the second semi in 27.96sec, holding defending champ Seaglas Tiger by over four lengths in 27.96sec Both though bunched briefly at the start and can go better.
Four unseeded runners and two middles will go into Monday’s Greyhound Board draw for the £10,000 final.
It’s two unseeded, one middle and three wide seeds through to the £8,000 Stayers Classic decider.
Marginally fastest was Angela Harrison’s Waltham Magic, who blasted to a 37.58sec win in the second semi, chased home by Boon’s Regency hero Zascandil, three lengths behind.
The opening 630m semi saw Hutton complete his double through Kingsbrook Glyn, who drew clear going into the third bend for an over four lengths win in a marginally slower 37.59sec.
Tom Levers’ Beechgrove Bell qualified in second. Aayamza Royal was run off her feet early and went out here.
Bubbly Dave remains unbeaten in Britain after another gallant win for the Champagne Club in the third semi. Paul Young’s star set off after Stuart Buckland’s leader Daddys Prince, getting up on the run-in to win by just over a length in 37.70sec.
In the sprint heats, Kirsty Grayson’s Coolavanny Dylan was quickest in 15.33sec.
David Mullins’ Shrewd Call made it six wins in a row in the other heat but that seemed unlikely after he walked out. However, as the field bunched at the bend, he gallantly took his chance to pounce and catch leading Swift Guard in 15.40sec
The other pups heats earlier went to Bateson’s Beaming Patsy (10-1), winning on his debut in 28.47sec and Carol Weatherall’s Holdem Lauren in 28.35sec
Tony Williamson, Monmore’s racing manager, reacted to the Gold Cup: “All three heat winners were really impressive with a length between them on some top class winning times, all breaking the 28 second barrier and just two spots on the sectionals. It will be great final, I wish all connections in our four finals the best of luck on the night.”
He added of the pups: “Signet Ace showed great speed retaining an unbeaten record, this is a fantastic young prospect.”
The finals’ draws will be made by the Greyhound Board on Monday morning. Supporting opens over a variety of distances close 11am on Wednesday.
Next Saturday’s RPGTV broadcast promises to be one of the best of the year with Jason Barrasford and Tony Bullen in the studio, hosting the Monmore gala plus the eagerly awaited third round (the last 48) of the BoyleSports Irish Derby, live from Shelbourne. The remainder of the Irish Classic will also be shown live on the channel.
