The BGBF Northern Plate, a new Cat 1 for British Breds, will have its first running at Newcastle in September! The BGBF sponsors a variety of competitions for British Breds over the year, including a Cat 3 Marathon, a sprint, a scurry, various four bend competitions and of course the Cat 1 British Bred Derby, the British Breeders’ Stakes at Nottingham, and the BGBF Swindon Produce Stakes.
Up to now however there have been no BGBF events further north than Doncaster and when the Forum Committee underwent a big change in April, this was one of the areas the incoming committee members wanted to address. Thanks to the British Greyhound Racing Fund the Forum was able to expand its schedule of competitions into this important area.
BGBF Chair Liz Mort said: ‘We are delighted to have been able to secure this new event for breeders, trainers and owners of British Bred greyhounds in the North.
“We sponsor several competitions over the year, but up to now there have been no BGBF races north of Doncaster! We know that British breeding is especially strong in the North but our schedule of competitions just didn’t reflect that! We felt a good, prestigious annual competition for Northern breeders was needed. We want it to be as open to entries as possible, so it will be over Standard distance and for all-aged dogs and bitches. Running it as a Cat 1 will I hope emphasise how important we feel this area is to British Breeding.
“We would like to thank the Fund for their support, British Breeding is so important to the future success of the sport as a whole.’ Ian Walton, Operations Manager of Newcastle Stadium, said: “We are very excited about this new competition – Newcastle has a strong connection with British Breeding and I know it will be enormously popular with our local trainers, breeders and owners! We will work with the BGBF to promote it and we can guarantee that the Final night will see a great evening’s racing!’ The £7,500 to the winner competition will be for 36 British Bred greyhounds, plus reserves, run over three consecutive Thursdays, with the Final on Thursday 26 September 2019.

Glenn Lynas: 'best moment in the sport'Witton Derecho thrills connections with British-bred triumph...WITTON DERECHO gave owner-breeder Glenn Lynas his “best moment in the sport” when making all to land the £7,500 final of the inaugural BGBF Northern Plate over 480m at Newcastle on Thursday, writes Jonathan Kay.
Trained by Lynas’s partner Jill Sutherst, Witton Derecho was challenged by Colliery Billy to the first turn but took command at that point.
Favourite King Turbo recovered from a moderate start to go round third but was outsped by kennelmate King Lennon along the back and then stopped in his tracks at the third.
King Lennon did get through at that point and went after Witton Derecho but to no avail as the Sunderland bitch stayed on well to win by over a length in 28.30sec.
Owner Lynas said: “She’s run a stormer, out and gone.
“It’s my best moment in greyhound racing, and I’ve been in the dogs over 40 years.
“I’m 63 years old and still excited by the game.”
Harry Williams completed a double on the supporting card courtesy of Pond Natalya and Pond Ricardo.
