BRAMBLE REGGIE, trained by Steven Anderson who was instrumental in securing the sponsorship which allowed the competition to go ahead, produced a brilliant run to set the first round standard in the Alconex All England Cup over 480m at Newcastle on Thursday, writes Jonathan Kay of the Racing Post....

However, it was a very bitter-sweet night for the local handler as his Bramble Milburn went wrong in heat six when clear having also shown scintillating early pace.

Bramble Reggie bulleted from trap four in heat two and went on to beat Forest Jason by almost four lengths in 28.22sec, with John McLachlan’s Nadurra Dutch next best when posting 28.27sec as he enjoyed an all-the-way success in heat four.

Heavily-supported ante-post favourite Ice On Fire led home a 1-2-3 for Jimmy Fenwick in heat five.

The Puppy Classic champion rapidly put distance between himself and his rivals and, although tiring on the run-in, still had two lengths to spare over kennelmate Dilly Dilly in 28.28sec with Fenwick’s Lemon Noah qualifying in third.

Droopys Verve got his title defence off to the perfect start with an emphatic victory in the opening heat.

Angela Harrison’s star was ultimately sent off favourite after a real to-and-fro in the market with Roxholme Glory and always looked set to prove the support right after getting inside Mahoonagh Annie to lead at the opening turn.

In command afterwards, he came away to beat Roxholme Glory, who found trouble on more than one occasion, by five lengths in 28.40sec.

Harrison went on to complete a double when her Droopys Nadal took advantage of Bramble Milburn’s misfortune to take heat six in 28.70sec.

Heat three went to Debbie Calvert’s Payyaway Kane came again having been crowded when in front at the first turn, ultimately forging clear on the run-in to beat Grogeen Country by over three lengths in 28.63sec.

*The draw for Thursday’s semi-finals will be made at the GBGB on Friday morning.

ICE ON FIRE capitalised on being drawn inside fastest heat winner Bramble Reggie to beat a high-class field in the second semi-final of the Alconex All England Cup over 480m at Newcastle on Thursday, writes Jonathan Kay.

The pair both flashed out and could barely be separated going to the first bend where Ice On Fire delayed turning left and basically knocked Bramble Reggie out of contention.

The Jimmy Fenwick-trained Ice On Fire rode the trouble and asserted, the Puppy Classic champion going on to beat Nadurra Dutch by a length and a half in 28.34sec with defending champion Droopys Verve just missing out in third.

Fastest time of the night came from Hayley Keightley's Roxholme Jim in the opening semi as made all to beat Payyaway Kane by four lengths in 28.30sec, but the winning trainer just came up short of qualifying another finalist when her Roxholme Glory missed out by a short-head in a messy final semi behind Gary Carmichael's 2018 All England third Gazilly Shay (29.04sec) and Grogeen Country.

The PBU Ltd Angel of the North Oaks heats saw all three market leaders beaten with Pat Rosney's Vatican Saab (28.57sec) fastest when springing a 10-1 surprise in the second where reigning champion Geelo Blissful departed after a troubled run.

Gavin Holman's Easy On and Steven Anderson's Bramble Aneece could not be separated in the third after crossing the line in 28.87sec, while Kevin Hutton's Magical Vera landed the opener in 29.01sec where better fancied kennelmate Bull Run Byte was unluckily eliminated in third.

Gary Ferguson's Ivar opened his British account in style as he set the standard in the heats of the Mark Lennox Memorial Puppy Trophy over 480m, coming home more than seven lengths clear in the opener as he posted 28.44sec. Other heats went to Julie Bateson's Tasty Treat (28.76sec) and Harry Williams' Twins Azzaro (28.84sec).

A cracking night for Ferguson also saw his Zeno fastest in the heats of the Aquajet Great North Run over 670m, the British debutant taking the third in 40.70sec after earlier victories for Stephen Atkinson's Snazzy Reaction (41.07sec) and William Finley's Fancy A Dance (41.21sec).
