BROOKSIDE RICHIE, a dog running at the absolute peak of his considerable powers, produced a stunning display to complete an unbeaten run through Newcastle's Arc Northern Flat on Thursday night, writes Phil Donaldson of the Racing Post..

The Jimmy Fenwick-trained star, pride and joy of local owner Richie Vickers, took his record to seven wins from eight starts at the Byker circuit when storming home four and three-quarter lengths clear of a gallant Swift Silly over the 480m course, and in doing so underlined the old adage that a good dog can win from any trap as he shrugged off a potentially hazardous trap five draw.

Saving his fastest competition split of 4.48sec for the £12,500 final, Brookside Richie out-gunned the Raymond Hale-trained runner-up to the turn and held her at bay with a textbook display of front-running.

Tom Heilbron's Freedom Epic stayed on well for third, just half a length behind Swift Silly but they were all chasing shadows as Brookside Richie stopped the clock at a flying 28.18sec.

To put that run in context, Heilbron's Northern Puppy Derby hero Links Maverick, a highly talented youngster, earlier posted 28.57sec (4.49sec sectional) when making all in a puppy open on the supporting card.
