SPARTA MASTER again produced a stunning performance on the clock as Sharon Thompson's dog starred in the opening round of the Coral Coronation Cup over 575m at Romford on Friday, writes Jonathan Kay of the Racing Post.....
He had set a new track record in the heats of the Essex Vase and, after the opening four eliminators produced times which were much of a muchness, had clockwatchers purring once more after taking early control.
Galloping on powerfully, he won by over four lengths from a gallant Antigua Rum in a flying 34.88sec (normal). Well-fancied Roxholme Dolly blew her chance with a slow start and was eliminated.
Ernie Gaskin's Essex Vase champion Droopys Aoife made it five wins in a row in heat three as she overcome a tough-looking draw in four.
A fast start was key as she pinged out and then shut the door on Champion Stakes winner Aayamza Breeze when that well-supported rival tried to challenge between the last two bends, Droopys Aoife eventually scoring by two lengths in 35.31sec.
Gaskin had to settle for a qualifying position with Roman Empire in heat six after he was slowly away then suffered trouble in running as victory went to John Mullins' 20-1 chance Swift Tarquin in 35.38sec by two lengths from Sheldan.
There was a brief scare for the many odds-on supporters of Hayley Keightley's Roxholme Jim in heat four when he made a very average start but his superb early got him out of trouble.
He led from the first bend and quickly asserted, only coming back a little late on as 2018 Coronation champion Shotgun Bullet closed to within a length and a half of the 35.51sec winner.
The first two heats were won in similar fashion with pursuers getting up late on, namely Kevin Hutton's Kentish Prince (35.54sec) who collared long-time leader Droopys Mac by a neck in the opener then Patrick Janssens' defending champion Desperado Dan (35.48sec) who eventually wore down Tiffield Maximum right on the line in the second.
