FRIDAY 7-10-22 ROMFORD STADIUM.
ANTIGUA SUGAR, Towcester’s Juvenile Classic winner, was fastest over Romford’s 575m course as the Premier Greyhound Racing Champion Stakes kicked off on Friday night.
It was better news for connections after their loss of Antigua Cuddles. A dejected Nic Jeal reported that his bitch had unfortunately not survived her earlier operation.
Antigua Sugar, running Romford impressively well, had kicked on from fast starting Sporting Chile at the second turn but then faced an unexpected attack as that rival came again on the run for home.
Antigua Sugar, despite being impeded, gallantly held on for a short-head win in 34.87sec. The stewards disqualified Sporting Chile for fighting which now means there is a vacant trap four in Friday’s third semi-final
There was better news earlier for Sporting Chile’s trainer, Seamus Cahill, when Derrinasasfa Boss justified his confidence about going over six bends by kicking clear at the first bend and holding Droopys Garden by two lengths in 35.28sec
Ante-post favourite Warzone Tom safely qualified in second from the concluding heat six despite a slow start and first bend bunching. Romeo On Tilt had taken charge at the turn for Patrick Janssens, winning by over three lengths in 34.91sec.
The night opened with a battling effort from Master Ten Ten to land heat one despite a slow start and early bunching as Wentworth took them along. Sharon Thompson’s dog came through for a half length win over Waste House Izzy in 35.59sec
Droopys Solider caught the eye with a nice win first time round for Micheal Hurst in heat two. He led at the first bend to hold Antigua Bigun by three lengths in 34.99sec. Crossfeld Lexi kept on for third.
Defending champion Night Time Danny missed out with fourth place in heat four. This went to Paul Young’s Bubbly Cristal who led on the run in to beat Come Asyouare a length in 35.26sec

WHEN Warzone Tom rocketed out in the first Champion Stakes semi it was race over but to break an established track record makes the performance the sweeter for all involved.
Winner of Monmore’s £10,000 Summer Classic (630m) in August and last year’s Gold Collar (540m Crayford, also £10,000), Warzone Tom’s 34.55sec Romford time was half a length inside the previous figures of 34.59sec, set by Sparta Master nearly three years ago in a heat of the Essex Vase.
Droopys Garden, despite a slow start, was the other qualifier. She actually ran a cracker for Maxine Locke to keep the distance down to a ‘respectable’ four lengths.
There was a 7-1 surprise in the second semi as Arran Dunn’s Aero Squeak made all in 35.16sec. He broke in front, kept very wide but battled hard to hold Irene Barnard’s Come Asyouare off by a neck as the remainder bunched down the back.
Antigua Bigun (35.13sec) took his chance well for Mark Wallis when leading at the fifth in the third semi after 18-1 outsider Waste House Izzy had flown out and bowled along in front for David Mullins.
She battled on to scramble through as the other qualifier by half length over an unlucky Bubbly Cristal.
In the semis of the supporting Coral Standard Trophy there were identical 23.82sec winning times from Derek Knight’s veteran Carter Bar who made all in the second, then also Wallis’s Antigua Socks who led down the back in the third eliminator.
The opening semi went to Patrick Janssens’ Droopys Good (23.89sec), who bravely forced his way into the lead at the turn then held Rail Mccoy by nearly two lengths.
