Romford’s Arkell delighted with Puppy Cup full house

ROMFORD saw a full entry for the Coral Puppy Cup after the book closed to entries at noon on Monday ahead of Friday’s 400m heats of the £10,000-to-the-winner event.
Racing manager Mark Arkell said: “We hit 40 in the end which really pleased me. We hadn’t been getting the volume of entry for trial stakes or trial requests that we usually see so I was worried about filling.
“We’ve ended up over the 36, so that’s great. The likes of Matt Dartnall’s Fire And Ice [won in 23.74sec on Friday] really impressed last week, while Tom Heilbron’s Untold Rufiyaa looks set to go well. It should be another really strong Puppy Cup.”
The Category One competition starts with six heats on Friday night. The semi-finals are a week later on September 20, before the final features on a gala card on Friday, September 27.
Local trainer David Mullins, who has won the prestigious competition six times, is chasing an incredible five-timer after landing the last four titles courtesy of Tenpin (2020), Brookside Richie (2021), Romeo Hotshot (2022) and Romeo Crusade (2023).
