RACING POST ⭕️ PRICEWISE ⭕️
SUNDAY 9th JULY 2023
By Mr Tom Segal
BELBEK 2.50 Deauville + BREIZH SKY 2.50 Deauville
In recent years there has been plenty of talk this side of the Channel about the demise of French racing and it's true they don't have the big breeding operations the British and Irish still possess.
However, on this year's evidence, the French three-year-olds are at the very least holding their own against the rest of the European powerhouses, as home-trained horses have won all the Group 1 races for three-year-olds.
We get another chance to see the strength of the French horses in the Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat at Deauville (2.50) and once again the bookmakers are dismissive of their chances.
It is not too surprising because the 2,000 Guineas hero Chaldean is back in action and the drop to 7f with the promise of soft ground shouldn't be an issue for him at all. There is an argument for thinking he went off a bit fast in the St James's Palace last time when he was beaten by Paddington, but Frankie Dettori didn't have too many options from stall one, which has always been difficult on the round track at Ascot.
However, whichever way you look at it, Chaldean must have had a hard race that day and while he is a tremendously willing and talented colt, he's certainly not unbeatable with the Guineas form not looking any great shakes now.
The runner-up that day Hi Royal is back to take on Chaldean again and he might get closer as this trip looks his optimum. He won't mind it if the ground is soft, which is something that might be the case with the Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up Meditate as well.
Aidan O'Brien's filly was disappointing in the Coronation Stakes last time when she had the run of things at the front and the drop back to 7f on slower ground might help, although she did win at the Breeders' Cup on firm ground. Her form isn't that strong, though, and I felt that Roger Varian's Charyn picked up the pieces late on in the strongly run St James's Palace. His overall body of work doesn't suggest to me that he's a Jean Prat winner waiting to happen, so surely the value lies with the home team, who look to have been seriously underestimated again.
The obvious one is Breizh Sky, who has looks a much improved performer this season and was eyecatching from a bad draw in the Poulains two starts ago. On that occasion Maxime Guyon dropped him in from a wide draw and he had no chance given the way the race was run. The runner-up that day was Isaac Shelby, who wasn't far behind Chaldean at Ascot last time and the winner went on to be third despite a troubled passage in the French Derby.
Since then Breizh Sky has hacked up in a Group 3 at Longchamp back at this trip and he has Hi Royal to lead him from his low draw as well. I don't think his form is anywhere near as far behind the market leaders as the odds would suggest and he has conditions exactly as he'd like them as well.
It was tempting to just concentrate on Breizh Sky but the prices on the French horses are so out of kilter that it might be worth having a small bet on Andre Fabre's Belbek at a huge price as well. He beat Breizh Sky in the Lagardere as a two-year-old on Arc weekend and has not really had anything go his way so far this season. Last time he got caught in a pocket just as the race was beginning to take shape and couldn't show what he could do. That was his first run for a couple of months so he could improve for it and he was a much shorter price that day than Breizh Sky was.
From stall 12, Belbek is drawn around Chaldean, Mediate and Charyn, so he could be in the heat of the battle and the more rain that arrives the better.
