RACING POST ⭕️ PRICEWISE ⭕️
SUNDAY 2nd JULY 2023
By Mr Tom Segal
BIG GOSSEY 3.00 - Curragh + JON RIGGENS 3.00 - Curragh
RUTHLESS ARTICLE 3.12 - Uttoxeter
The form of the Derby was given a few boosts at Royal Ascot last week and it is hard to see the brilliant winner Auguste Rodin getting beaten in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh (3.40).
He came from a long way back to win at Epsom, and while Sprewell didn't get the best run and White Birch finished well, it really is hard to see the form being reversed, especially as Auguste Rodin has four stablemates in the field to make sure he doesn't get boxed in from stall one.
Aidan O'Brien surprisingly doesn't have a great recent record in the GAIN Railway Stakes (1.50) but nearly all his two-year-olds ran well at Royal Ascot and they have been in great form at this meeting. Unquestionable has always been a big talking horse and he looked good when winning over course and distance on his second start and is the choice of Ryan Moore.
He has to step up on that form to beat the Coventry third Bucanero Fuerte and His Majesty, who won on his side easily when fourth in the Norfolk. The faster the ground the better His Majesty will be and he would be my choice, although he's plenty short enough given he appears to be the second string in a very competitive race.
Consequently, I would rather have a couple of cracks at the Dubai Duty Free Rockingham Handicap (3.00). It's hard to know which side of the track is going to be favoured, so it might be safest to go for one on either side.
The first one is the topweight Big Gossey, who was really unlucky not to win this race last season given he was drawn in stall three and all the others in the frame were drawn 13 or higher. He has the same stall again this year but he has two British-trained pacesetters around him this time so he should get a better tow into the race.
Big Gossey goes really well at the Curragh, and having chased home Art Power in a Group 2 over 6f here last time, he is clearly in good form.
My other selection is Jon Riggens, another who goes well at this track. In a similar race to this in May, John Riggens was first home of those drawn low and the way he shot clear of those that raced around him strongly suggested he is on the upgrade.
Michaela's Boy is very fast and could be hard to catch for Mick Appleby and Sheikh Maz Mahood is a sprinter on the up but the best of the British could well be Came From The Dark, who comes from a stable in form and has dropped to a mark he should be able to win off.
It's not all about the Flat, though, because the ITV cameras are at Cartmel and Uttoxeter for some summer jump racing. There are Irish challengers in all of the races and it's great to see Jack Kennedy back in action at Cartmel, where he looks to have three good chances. However he's not the only Irish superstar jockey coming over because Rebecca Curtis has snapped up Danny Mullins for Ruthless Article in the bet365 Summer Cup Handicap Chase (3.12) at Uttoxeter and he can race off the same mark as when a comfortable winner over course and distance last July.
Prior to that effort, Ruthless Article had been second in this race, finishing ten lengths clear of the third, and if he's back to that level of form he will surely be extremely competitive at a track he clearly loves.
