after making a longish post that has gone up in the ether ,i shall make this a lot shorter. having made inquiries for loads of dogs.the prices seem to have risen dramatically.this if it continues will have a profound effect on racing .prizemoney .runners .and trainers. if there is a shortage for any lenght of time then, the doors to trainers of a couple of dogs will no doubt get open and a contract will be available anywhere .anywhere.there is a track. people who can rear there own will benifit most.what do others think about the prices of dogs. ??

SOME PEOPLE KEEP SAYING THERE'S A SHORTAGE OF GRADED GREYHOUNDS DOWN AT THE ZOO..
IF THAT IS TRUE/FACT THEN HOW COME PLENTY GET LEFT OFF EACH AND EVERY WEEK AND SOME HAVE TO WAIT UP TO 14/16 DAYS TO GET A RACE....

I phoned the racing office a few days ago, asking for a solo trial, they said i had to give the dog to a trainer, who then had to kennel the dog for TWENTY DAYS before it could have a trial. I understand that could cost around £8.00 per day, TOTAL cost of £160.00, all for a trial, and the dog might not hit a grading time, but its £160.00 to find out, whats all that about,

Thank you, i understand the license side of it, but to put it with a trainer for a minimum of TWENTY DAYS before the dog can have a trial is a little bit over the top. & still adds up to £160.00 for a trial.
thank you for your reply.

if as i presume you run dogs already .then you must have some idea if your dog will do the grading time.so if it has some form you can soon equate its times to azoo grading time.it wont be perfect but you could establish some times .if it falls within what you think is correct for your dog. then you can make a decission about the expense.

No disrespect meant towards any of our trainers as they all work hard for their sheckles - BUT......if you shop around you may find that your initial AND long term expense would be less than you quote here! I don't know all details as trainers prices vary somewhat, and once on track - some trainers are prepared to run your dog just for the prizemoney (which removes your kennel bill - but not (i don't think) - vets x's. Like shopping at ASDA, there are many deals - so you can take your pick, or so it appears! I suspect that you may already know this.....but just in case

As for "shortages" - I heard from a reliable source recently, that there are enough dogs on strength at the moment, so the reasons for duplications and the thorny problems of not getting a run, I can only assume - is the proverbial one of "satisfactory race make up", and there not being enough qualifying dogs for the relevant grades and of of course - within reason, boxes! Some time ago on here there were many many complaints of dogs being "boxed up", and for some time this just wouldn't go away. Now that we hardly see box complaints (one exception of BH recently) - one would think this could be because more duty of care is being taken by RO in getting as near as possible to what it is we want, when setting up races....could this be leading to the shortage of runs for some animals? Would we rather go back to continual almost daily complaints of "being boxed up?...tricky one for some - if I am on the right lines? Entering up on my dbase every week, duplicate runs show up and I get an idea of general trends when doing so - it's not easy for the grader, and I don't know what the solution is - other than for more dogs on strength which would rather obviously further exacerbate the problems being highlighted now regarding "lack of runs". We all want a solution - long term, perhaps a brainstorming session, but perhaps hard until we get all of the FACTS involved?

How about more sprint races, this would help to bring on pups and build them up, after all they would only get battered about for two bends. Regarding the price of dogs, if they are overpriced they dont sell, the ideal dog for bv is a A3/4 they should get runs, pups you dont see any change out of at least £1500 to get them to the track, more breeders having less litters on the ground, alot not breeding just not the money in it...Still hopefully things will keep on ticking over..
