Saturday Derby details, draw is 1pm Sunday
BY JIM CREMIN AT WIMBLEDON 5:54PM 1 JUN 2013
Race by race notes will be carried here through the evening.
The first three qualify from heats 14, 19, 22, 25 and 26; remainder is first FOUR.
Heat 14 (first THREE qualify)
1st Newinn Rocket trap 1 28.83sec 4.78sec sectional
2nd Smiler Jack trap 4 length and threequarters
3rd Frosby Barney trap 2 two lengths
Before racing, Pat Rosney, trainer of Newin Rocket, was wondering about trap one dogs breaking, he needn't have worried - his dog flew out. He runs wide on the straights, cutting the bends, so crowded up the dogs on the outside, making all, Smiler Jack, who cut in from four, came on the premises at the last turn and looked as if he might then go on, but he is coming back to peak fitness and will be the better for this. Only three qualified here, Frisby Barney, unluckily crowded at the start and second, gets another chance.
Heat 15 (first four qualify)
1st Glenpadden Post trap 3 28.80sec 4.91sectional
2nd Skate On trap 1 four lengths 4.68sec
3rd Whizzing Around trap 2 threequarters
4th Priceless Sky trap 4 one length
Ping, trap one came out like a rocket, Skate On clocking 4.68sec, the fastest so far. Whizzing Around, after a slow start, showed good speed to turn second. Glenpadden Post switched on the overdrive down the back, went second at the third and then kicked on off the last. Priceless Sky needed the fourth qualifying place after colliding with Bower Jerry and Head Case at the turn.
Heat 16 (first four qualify)
1st Farkland Tyson trap 3 28.87sec 4.74
2nd Reel Trickyone trap 4 two and a quarter
3rd Droopys Loner trap 1 half lengths
4th Lughill Thomas trap 6 three lengths
The two rank outsiders provided a bumper forecast here. Farkland Tyson flew out from three, and cut across fast up Droopys Loner, meanwhile Reel Trickyone screwed wide early from four, holding up Ballyhill Sub and Lughill Thomas, who were then bumped again on the second when Scolari Express stumbled. Droopys Loner was crowded again at the third when attempting to challenge, then ran out of puff as Reel Trickyone took second on the run in. Lughill Thomas secured fourth after a nightmare passage.
Heat 17 (first four qualify)
1st Holdem Spy trap 6 28.75sec 4.88
2nd Hipower Rhino trap 2 three and a half lengths
3rd Sherrys Rebound trap 5 threequarters
4th Loughteen Blanco two and a half lengths
Loughteen Blanco was hopelessly left here, but survives after a first bend pile up put Droopys Keith on the floor and badly interfered with Castlelyons Cofi. The rest of the field were then in a heap at the second bend, where Holdem Spy kicked on and took control at halfway and will be the better for this. Hipower Rhino (led to second) has pace. So does Sherrys Rebound (led briefly at the second).
Heat 18 (first four qualify)
1st Millwards Matt trap 6 28.94sec 4.77sec
2nd Farloe Barracuda trap 1 neck 4.70sec
3rd Cabra Buck trap 4 half length
4th Hillcroft Joe trap 2 short head
Wimbledon should pay Farloe Barracuda appearance or 'excitement' money. He made this the finish of the Derby so far as 'the cavalry' closed off the last bend. Millward Matt gallantly got up, but the Barracuda only failed by a neck and is through - he can improve too as he has yet to fly out (4.70). Everything else was run off its feet early, he is a potential hazard to anything. Cabra Buck will be sharper for this. Glanmire Lad ran out of petrol and just missed out.
Heat 19 (first THREE qualify)
1st Droopys Pride trap 3 28.88sec 4.88
2nd Fermoy Henry trap 1 one length
3rd Cloheena Micky length and a half
Droopys Pride ran a tremendous first bend, then sweetly held his position at the third to push the leading Fermoy Henry out of the way - it was a cracking run from Elaine Parker's dog. Fermoy Henry moves wide on the straights, cutting the bends, he has serious pace up. Trap one though is not ideal. Power Of God got a whack at the start. Alterra never got going. Cloheena Micky took the third spot with a typical good burst up.
Heat 20 (first four qualify)
1st Farloe Buddy trap 3 28.73sec 4.87sec
2nd Greenwell Mentor trap 4 length and threequarters
3rd Longwood Warrior trap 2 short head
4th Droopys Ed Moses trap 6 two and a half lengths
Farloe Buddy won this well for Owen McKenna, shrugging off first bend crowding (Cavan Dancer clobbered when fast up Greenwell Mentor clipped the fence) then shaking off Longwood Warrior, who was disputing second, at the third turn. Greenwell Mentor, after a modest break, had taken then along, before Farloe Buddy asserted at the last. Longwood Warrior just failed to get second - he will be the better for the race. Droopys Ed Moses walked out again then dropped himself out.
Heat 21 (first four qualify)
1st Fire Height Spec trap 2 28.79sec 4.81sec
2nd trap 6 Greenwell Lark trap 6 five and threequarters
3rd Farloe Luigi trap 5 short head
4th Bowtime Regan trap 1 one length
This was clinical, Fire Height Spec out and gone, winning easily. Greenwell Lark was remarkable, last away, she was clobbered on the second bend, was still last at the third, but took off to snatch second. It should be a satisfying journey back to Scotland for the Flahertys, whose pair are through. Farloe Luigi was third in a race where the pace of the leader put everything under pressure. Bowtime Regan was fourth. Last year's finalist Coolavanny Bert showed to the third before checking and dropping out.
BOWSER WENT ROUND
Heat 22 (first THREE qualify)
1st Trewmount Snap trap 3 29.13sec 4.85sec
2nd Money Talks trap 1 length and a quarter
3rd Longwood Bound trap 5 length and a half
The race after the bowser saw the slowest time so far. Tremount Snap might have been an outsider but he did reach the quarter-finals last year and is a proper dog, trained at Kinsley by Darren Fretwell. It was a thrilling battle (and therefore slow run race) between him and Ireland's Money Talks before Trewmount Snap asserted at the third. Longwood Bound was crowded wide early by Trewmount Snap, and then Longwood Bound collided with Priceless Rumble at the turn, however Longwood Bound took the vital third spot, just depriving poor Longford By Pass.
Heat 23 (first four qualify)
1st Holborn Junior trap 4 29.03sec 4.84sec
2nd Farloe Warhawk two and a half lengths
3rd Regal Bailio one length
4th Rio Torino two lengths
Another slow run race, with Farloe Warhawk and Holborn Junior locked together down the back until Holborn Junior kicked on at the third. Make no mistake this was a top notch run from the dog owned by Larry O'Rourke and trained by Graham Holland. Daddys Knowsbest ended up turning a somersault on the second bend, but picked himself up. Regal Bailio walked out, but avoided trouble to qualify. Judicial Ruling, a finalist last year, was clobbered at the second.
Heat 24 (first four qualify)
1st Stonepark Crash trap 2 29.12sec 4.71sec
2nd Farloe Trojan trap 4 length and a quarter
3rd Dinner Hunter trap 6 one length
4th Any Dak trap 3 half length
Better luck for Michael O'Donoivan here after Judicial Ruling's elimination. Stonepark Crash led. However, again the time is meaningless as Any Dak got a lovely run to challenge and closely dispute the lead down the back, before Stonepark Crash asserted again at the third. Farloe Trojan took third despite getting lost at the quarter, running off - he will be better from six. Dinner Hunter finished with a flourish, taking third despite being last at the final turn.
Heat 25 (first THREE qualify)
1st Bittles Bar trap 1 28.91sec 4.77sec
2nd Benkaat Nero trap 3 three lengths
3rd Bubbly Rocky trap 6 two and a half lengths
A procession with Bittles Bar running these ragged. He flew out, 4.77, race over. Benkatt Nero ran on late for second. Bubbly Rocky was the third qualifier.
Heat 26 (first THREE qualify)
1st Shaneboy Spencer trap 3 28.67sec 4.66sec
2nd Benkaat Blue trao 1 four and a quarter
3rd Priceless Pilot threequarters
Fastest of the night, because Shaneboy Spencer rocketed out (4.66 sectional), setting up a long lead. Exocet went up fast, but clipped the fence, and then ran into Malbay Phanter. Beankaat Blue was left second. Priceless Pilot, still last aapporaching the final turn, took off force his way through in a race where only three qualified.
*Fridays Shane has been reclassified as a middle for the second round draw, which takes place 1pm Sunday at Wimbledon (in the second bend executive boxes).
Farloe Calvin is to be seeded middle.
