BAPP Group Of Companies Scurry Cup – Belle Vue 260m – £2,500.....
DROOPYS REEL, the youngest finalist, became a rare bitch winner of the Scurry Cup as the Angela Harrison-trained runner stormed to victory in the BAPP Group of Companies-sponsored sprint championship at Belle Vue on Saturday.
Well away along with BresMed Northern Sprint winner Coolavanny Dylan (Kirsty Grayson), Droopys Reel used the inside line to challenge and then pass the Sheffield dog on the crown of the bend and had the race in safe-keeping, winning by one and three-quarter lengths from the running-on Carl Perry-trained Geelo Brezza.
Victory for the October 17 daughter of Azza Azza Azza and Droopys Dorothy, just out of puppy status and returning from a spell on the sidelines, ended a drought for bitches in the Scurry stretching back to 1990 when the John McGee-trained Ready Rubbed struck gold at Catford.
Jimmy Wright, partner and assistant of winning trainer Angela Harrison, said the kennel were delighted with the progress of Droopys Reel – owned by Ken Campbell, Paul Maragh, Don Thompson and Billy Thompson – and will now target the end-of-season National Sprint at Nottingham.
“Over the years it’s an event which has decided the Sprinter of the Year title and, now she’s won one title, it seems the obvious place to go. She’ll have some one-offs in between – and hopefully we can still win some Trainer of the Year points!
“Our aim is to be finish in the top six, so Saturday at Belle Vue certainly helped. I’m just delighted we got her back at all – she was struck into at the pick-up at Romford and her wrist was very swollen the next day. I actually thought her career might have been over.
“Thankfully we had Malcolm Ness look over her. Malcolm is a retired orthopaedic surgeon – a top surgeon – and the MRI scan thankfully showed no lasting damage and we brought her back after five weeks or so and she’s been improving since.
“I knew she’d come on for her heat and semi-final, her first races after the time off. She’s just got this electric surge in her races – it might come at the start, or just after, or into the bend. Whenever and wherever it comes she shows herself to be a terrific bitch.
“Michael (Dunphy) phoned to say he might have a bitch for me. He told me she’d not stay, but was fast up to 400m, so we took her and gave her a couple of runs over four bends to see where we were with her.
“She must have been eight lengths over 500m at Sheffield before struggling to get home. We then took her to Sunderland and she won two races over 450m, the last one on the night Velvet Juliet won the Classic for us.
“I still had the Romford Puppy Cup in mind for her but ran her next at Monmore and she did a fast 15.09sec when beating Coolavanny Dylan, who’s a top sprinter of course. So we knew we had a very fast bitch and she won well at Romford over 400m.
“It was after that race she was struck into and missed the Puppy Cup, so there was always a chance the Scurry might come too soon. But she handled Belle Vue well, came on for her two races there, and I knew she had a chance – in what was a very good Scurry final.
“We won it a few years back with Walshes Hill, so we always like going to Belle Vue – and from what I saw there on Saturday, the future should be very bright now that Arc have taken over running the stadium.”
Wright explained: “It was mobbed – and with plenty of bookmakers too. It was like Walthamstow 20 years ago! Seems odd to say given how long the stadium has been there but it has huge potential.
“It’s already very popular clearly at the weekends and, with the right investment in our sport and the others they have there, it could be even more. It feels like a sleeping giant and if they staged open races regularly we’d be there for sure.”
Belle Vue racing manager Scott Ellis was delighted with Scurry Cup night, which was chiefly supported by victory for local star Ballymac Ambrose, trained by Bev Heaton for husband Dave and Kevin Gill, in the final of the BAPP Group of Companies Northern Flat.
He said: “Its always a pleasure to be hosting open-race competitions at Belle Vue. Many thanks to sponsors, the BAPP Group of Companies, for their continued support and also thank-you to all who participated.
“The Scurry Cup final was hugely competitive, one of the closest I’ve seen and attracted a large crowd here. Congratulations go to trainer Angela Harrison and winning connections, and to connections of Ballymac Ambrose.
“It was particularly satisfying to see Ambrose win the Northern Flat, especially after struggling with injury early in his career and then equalling the track record here. Credit goes to Belle Vue trainer Beverly Heaton.
“The whole night went off without a hitch and, even our graded runners managed to get in on the act with a series of BAPP Group of Companies-sponsored sweepstakes finals.
“There’s now a feeling of optimism here at Belle Vue and we hope to be hosting these competitions again next year.”
