SMALLMEAD made a stunning start to her 2021 campaign when demolishing her heat four rivals in the Coral Essex Vase over 575m at Romford, writes Jonathan Kay of the Racing Post.
John Mullins’ St Leger heroine, who had been first past the post in the Champion Stakes at Romford in September, was in total command from the first bend and came home almost seven lengths to the good of Perrys Choice in a best-of-night 34.84sec (+15).
Mark Wallis gave evidence he will mount a determined challenge to regain his Trainer of the Year title from Patrick Janssens when sending out a heat treble.
Drumcrow Brent was his first winner when outstaying kennelmate Antigua Boy in the opener in 35.39sec, Antigua Rum made a winning return from a lengthy absence when winning heat three in 35.23sec while Aayamza Lexie went from the front in heat five in posting an excellent 34.93sec.
Janssens' Romford specialist Desperado Dan scraped through in third in heat one while he did get on the scoresheet when Doolin Princess won heat two in 35.40sec.
Heat six proved scrappy with Kevin Hutton’s Droopys Mansion pouncing late to shade Wallis’s Antigua Romeo and Janssens’ Seaglass Tiger, also in 35.40sec.
All three trainers subsequently added further victories in one-off contests with Hutton’s Slaneyside Izzy taking the 750m finale which brought the curtain down on the career of third-placed 2019 Golden Jacket heroine Stardom.
