SPARTA MASTER bounced out to clock a fastest of the night 34.77sec win in the second semi-final for the Coral Essex Vase on Friday night.
However, the many fans of Sharon Thompson’s star were given a fright as Antigua Rum came with a late run and only failed by a neck to get there.
The latter is owned by Amanda Jeal and trained by Mark Wallis.
The pair have a second finalist next Friday (live on RPGTV) via their Antigua Romeo, who led on the run in to beat Patrick Janssens’ Seaglass Tiger, who had taken them along in the opening semi. Antigua Romeo got up by threequarters of a length in 35.32sec. There had been early bunching which also affected favourite Smallmead, who finished a close up fourth.
Janssens also has two into the decider through his evergreen stalwart Desperado Dan.
In another close finish, he was fended off by threequarters of a length as well by Ernie Gaskin’s Droopys Aoife, the 2019 champion - that was the final Sparta Master missed due to a traffic nightmare.
Drooppys Aoife, who on Friday was having her 50th race, had gone soon clear in 35.09sec. Desperado Dan, making his 89th start, broke well but didn’t take the first bend smoothly before keeping on nicely.
Newly attached to Romford, Michelle Brown sent out her first winner of the year through Signature Callum in a supporting 400m heat.
Owned by Criag Chesson, he was soon clear in 24.14sec, beating Jet Stream Mags by three and a half lengths.
Fastest heat winner was Janssens’ Goldies Hoddle, who made all to take heat two in 24.03sec, while Sam West’s Ballynabee Lucky got up by a short-head to catch fast starting Be Assured in 24.13sec
