Benny, care to tell the story of the night at Oldham when during heavy rain a white dog changed colour and another lost one of its black eyes. One of the many reasons I never went flapping.

BOLTON GREYHOUND STADIUM was without doubt the best flapping track in the country.
The opens staged at Raikes Lane were unreal greyhounds came from all over the country and also when the Bolton Derby was on they even came over from Ireland.
I will never ever forget a greyhound called ORANGE PEEL it flew around the sprint trip and then only a few months after it went on to win The Greyhound Derby at White City {London} under it's real name of course that was the one and only I'M SLIPPY.
On the graded races you needed a decent dog to even get graded on and then you had to beat the grader it was not easy but if you could do the job on Bolton you were halfway there when it came to visiting the likes of Oldham, Westhoughton, Preston, Blackpool.
Happy days back then for sure....

I CAN REMEMBER MANY TALES about Bolton. and other flaps.switching dogs .changing dogs colours. and even running dogs for bitches. we were in a rather big final at GOSFORTH nr Newcastle.we had two in it and drew the wrong traps for the pair of them.On the final night, we switched traps [two very good dogs]pure madness and noble lox[he had no kishkers]ice on fires dad matty Fenwick, was also in the final and Russ who later run highgate. said I know youve switched traps , but Fenwicks have switched dogs.it was a top ngrc dog I can't remember but we thought it was called it's amazing.a top dog in its day. ANYWAY, IT WON BY ABOUT 10 LENGTHS AND WE ALL WENT HOME POORER BUT WISER. many tales I could tell you about Bolton and trainers past and present who ran Bolton who were real fiddlers at Bolton and are still training,to this day.some who now pretend to be straight but I know different. cause for 18 months i was assistant manager at Bolton under harry Thorpe the wisest cagiest manager ever.he was a legend. could go on for hours.

One of the many reasons I never went flapping. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- he dog mentioned here was owned by an Irishman.he had done a good job of dying it, but when it rained heavily the dye came off its legs and the crowd was in hysterics laughing, the race was run but it was backed but it never won.it was in an open race but all the crowd knew the dog's name.it was a decent grader at the time.as i sit writing it brings back memories of plenty of other incidents long ago.
