The Super League side that spends the lowest on the salary cap with βhundreds of thousands of poundsβ difference....
THE debate surrounding the salary cap is an ever-changing one. From the need to try and balance the competition to the fact that only three teams have ever won the Super League Grand Final, there are raging arguments on both sides of the equation.
For one side β the Salford Red Devils β the reality is that they cannot afford to pay the full salary cap and have to try and do things differently to their rivals.
βIf you look at our list going back to 2018, thereβs probably 15 to 20 players where they all had an individual reason why they werenβt making it,β Blease told Roar.
βEither cast aside by their clubs, problems off the field, not wanted, fell out with someone β a whole host of reasons.
βBut we do due diligence on their background. (Former Great Britain, Wigan and Sydney Roosters star turned TV pundit) Phil Clarke called us βthe team of misfitsβ when we got to the Grand Final, which some of our fans took exception to, but without disrespecting the team, he was probably right. Three-quarters of them were players that other clubs didnβt want.β
Blease went further, describing how he has taken onboard the NRL as an example of βthorough due diligenceβ to get the players he and Paul Rowley want.
βI visited NRL clubs and one of my interests was: how do they do it over there?β explained Blease.
βTheyβve all got fantastic databases that churn out a lot of information, and thereβs clubs in Super League who have that too β however, we donβt.
βWhat we do is nothing fancy: itβs thorough due diligence on the player, his background and his stats from all the key platforms that every Super League club uses. We watch hours and hours of video.β
With that, the Red Devils have to make it work financially and that means paying much less than the actual salary cap of Β£2.1 million.
βWe pay hundreds of thousands of pounds of salary cap lower.
βThereβs only a couple in the league who are near us, the rest are probably paying much more than us, so we have to be very selective.

SALFORD RED DEVILS JOIN CLUB BOARD DIVERSITY PROJECT WITH RFL AND INCLUSIVE BOARDS. by Harry Siddall | Dec 12, 2022Rugby League boardrooms are set to become more diverse, thanks to a ground-breaking partnership between the Rugby Football League (RFL) and executive search firm Inclusive Boards.
Inclusive Boards specialises in supporting organisations to become more inclusive, through greater board diversity and stronger governance structures.
Through the Rugby League Club Board Diversity Project, an initial 10 professional clubs will work with the RFL and Inclusive Boards to broaden and strengthen the skills, knowledge and expertise within their boardrooms.
The 10 clubs are: Barrow Raiders; Halifax Panthers; Huddersfield Giants; Hunslet; Midland Hurricanes; Salford Red Devils; Sheffield Eagles; Swinton Lions; Wakefield Trinity; Widnes Vikings.
Each club will develop inclusive leadership and recruitment processes to ensure that the sport is able to attract and choose from the best possible candidates.
Joanne Hawkins, Board Chair & NED of Salford Red Devils said: βSalford Red Devils are proud to be working alongside both the RFL and Inclusive Boards to widen the skills and knowledge of our Board, while reflecting the true inclusivity and diversity of the City of Salford.β
RFL Inclusion Lead, Ben Abberstein, explains: βRugby League is a sport that takes great pride in its history of diversity and representation at the highest level. The Club Board Diversity Project aims to ensure that this is present at leadership levels.
βThis project is another important part of our TACKLE IT inclusion strategy and a massive step forward for the game β a step that is only made possible by the clubsβ commitment to being representative of their communities.β
Samuel Kasumu, Co-Founder of Inclusive Boards adds: βWeβre proud to work with Rugby Football League and to be at the forefront of positive change in the sports sector.
βWe firmly believe that this programme will encourage more people to get involved with sport, both recreationally and professionally.β
Inclusive Boards will work alongside all participating clubs, ensuring they each receive a baseline audit during the initial stages of the programme. This practice ensures a sound understanding is gained of each clubβs needs and what work has already taken place to improve participation.
Two training sessions will then be designed and delivered followed by one-to-one guidance and support from the Inclusive Boards team. Inclusive Boards will also recruit a pool of diverse candidates for each club, taking a skills-first approach.

Salford Red Devils prop Tyler Dupree has signed a new contract with the club until the end of 2025.
The 22-year-old only joined Salford in May from Championship side Widnes on a deal until the end of next year.
But he has been rewarded for helping Salford finish sixth before losing to eventual winners St Helens in the Super League play-off semi-finals.
"The club took a chance on me and helped me fulfil a dream of playing in Super League,"
"So I feel like signing a new deal is a good way to repay them."
