RACING POST ⭕️ PRICEWISE ⭕️
SUNDAY 23rd JULY 2023
By Mr Tom Segal
LORD MASSUSUS 3.00 Curragh
VILLAGE VOICE 4.00 Curragh
One thing most punters can get wrong from time to time is concentrating on ground conditions too much. Yes, there are plenty of horses who love soft ground and plenty of horses who don't, but sometimes we get preoccupied by that rather than concentrating on what wins most races – and that is ability.
Of course there is no point siding with horses who have shown they can't handle the prevailing conditions, so for me it's always ability first and foremost and suitability for the task next. One such horse who seems to have both of those attributes in spades is Lord Massusus, who could spring a minor surprise in the Romanised Minstrel Stakes at the Curragh (3.00).
Lord Massusus was a good two-year-old but has improved massively this season, winning his first two starts with real authority. However, it was his fourth in a Listed race on quick ground over a mile at this track that really marked him down as a horse with a bright future because he flew home from a tricky draw.
It's always hard to make up ground around the outside on fast ground at the Curragh and Lord Massusus had absolutely no chance the way the race was run. Given he stayed on to real good effect, he must have every chance of reversing placings with likely favourite Tarawa, who was two places ahead of him but had a much smoother passage.
I expect the runners will navigate towards the middle or near side, so stall one might not be any great help but he acts on soft ground and 7f might be his best trip too. Furthermore, Lord Massusus had nearly two months off before his last run, so he might improve for it as well.
Jumbly is a big danger dropped back to 7f as she didn't seem to quite get home in a Group 2 at Royal Ascot over a mile last time. She won as a two-year-old on soft ground as well.
The other Group race on the card, the Michael John Kennedy Memorial Stakes (4.00), has a market headed by the unbeaten Cadeau Belle. She left her maiden form a long way behind when winning a Listed race at Navan and, after only two runs, she is likely to improve again. However, she will need to because this is a better race and the victory last time wasn't that impressive on the clock.
As a result, I'm pretty keen to take on Cadeau Belle and the obvious place to start is Moon De Vega, who is two from two for Paddy Twomey and stayed on well to win a Listed race last time. That gives her a shot but at the prices I much prefer Village Voice, who had a lot against her when well beaten in the Ribblesdale last time but still shaped like a filly with plenty of potential.
To start with, she clearly didn't stay the 1m4f and she probably found the ground too fast as well, but she travelled sweetly around outside in a race where it was hard to come from off the pace. Basically, that is a total throw-out run and Village Voice's previous win in the Salsabil Stakes at Navan is much more relevant.
That day she beat some good fillies, including the Ribblesdale runner-up, easily on soft ground over 1m2f and, after only four runs, there is surely more to come from her.
