RACING POST PRICEWISE SATURDAY AUGUST 26th 2023 ANTE-POST..Mr TOM SEGAL....
SKY BET EBOR HANDICAP {HERITAGE HANDICAP}
3.35 - YORK
ABSURDE @ 12/1 NAGANO @ 16/1
In any staying handicap on the Flat these days the first port of call has to be to look at the entries made by jumps trainers. They haven't dominated the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap like they have the Cesarewitch, for example, but Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott and Tony Martin have won the race with decent hurdlers.
Funnily enough, there aren't that many entries from the jumping fraternity this year, but it is still a winning hurdler who stands out in the Mullins-trained Absurde.
The five-year-old, who ran out an easy winner of a novice hurdle at Killarney in May, was a big eyecatcher behind stablemate Vauban in the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot, storming home from the back of the field to finish an admittedly distant second. He did much the best of those held up off the pace in that race, and a strongly run Ebor with York's long home straight should be right up his street.
Furthermore, the Ebor has become a race in which it is extremely hard for an unexposed contender to get a run, so Absurde is likely to be up against a whole heap of horses already well known to the handicapper. In contrast, that Ascot run was just Absurde's second outing for Mullins and his first on the Flat for Ireland's champion jumps trainer, so there should be plenty more to come.
While Absurde is certain to get a run in the Ebor off a BHA mark of 104, the same cannot be said of Sweet William, who was really impressive at Newbury on Saturday and would be a big threat to all if he was to get into the race. He will get a rise in the weights after his win at the weekend, but the Ebor will be a lot classier than that contest. Exactly the same sentiments apply to impressive Ascot winner Real Dream, as he will be on the cusp of getting a run as well.
Nagano is another for whom connections will be biting their nails to see if he gets a run, but if he does he has to be on the shortlist. An impressive winner of a good handicap at Glorious Goodwood in 2021, the five-year-old was noticeably strong in the market despite his near two-year absence in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot, and went some way to justifying that confidence as he was just getting rolling when badly squeezed out.
That is the second time that has happened to him at the royal meeting and he does take time to warm up, so maybe Ascot's short straight doesn't play to his strengths. He should be much better coming with a long, sweeping run and in that regard York will suit him better, and we know he stays the trip as he was a head second in a 1m6f Group 3 at Goodwood two years ago.
Before that Ascot run his trainer Roger Varian, who won the Ebor in 2021 with a similar type in Fujaira Prince, described Nagano as having a lot of class, and he still has the potential to be a lot better than his handicap mark of 100.
Of the rest, it would be no surprise if the two Sir Mark Prescott-trained horses – Eagle's Way and Omniscient – launched themselves to the forefront of the market in the coming weeks. There is plenty more to come from them, but both will have to win a race and incur a penalty if they are to have any chance of getting in the line-up.
Scriptwriter and Tashkhan ran well over course and distance behind Hamish recently, and all three have their chances, while I wouldn't rule out a big run from Lone Eagle, and he could be a market mover if Frankie Dettori takes the ride.
Lone Eagle seems to have found a new lease of life since moving to Ralph Beckett, and breezed into the lead turning for home in the Gold Cup only to not stay the trip having been a bit too keen.
