I used to go to Cradley Heath dog sales with my dad. He bought a few dogs from there. We used to take a felt tip pen with us. All the dogs had a lot number on the collars. When we went to collect the dogs from the kennels we would change the numbers on the collars so all the nosy buggers wouldn't know what we had bought. They were crap leads Fred..
But your spot on with them lot numbers on the collars.
I only ever went a couple of times to the sales at Cradley Heath a good mate of mine use to put them round a flapping track on the journey home Happy Days for sure.

Another Story
Our family pet raced at Blackburn, his race name was My Pal, he won 62 races during his career. In 1972 after winning the last race on a Friday night at Blackburn, my father was called in to the judges box by Tommy and Alec Atherton. They were a dog short for the 535 yards open at Bolton the following night. It was Β£20 entry, Β£100 and memento as they called it then, for the winner. They each agreed to pay half and half towards the entry fee. One thing that was not mentioned, that was the change of name of the dog. I asked my dad what his name would be in the open, he says I presume it would be My Pal. But seeing the racecard the following night at Bolton, The Atherton's had called him "Half and Half". Unfortunately, after all this he finished third, beaten a length and three quarters by the winner. The Colliers brothers from Farnworth, remember them, they had one in the same open, they always had quality hounds.

Probably Joe Collierβs who had the Carpet shop on Market St , they had some great dogs, I remember Toker Rocket in particular he was very useful . Going back to Sammy Dawson in an earlier post his Mrs was a lovely German woman and their next door neighbour was Seamus Masterson both lived at the junction of Manchester Rd & Moses Gate . I always remember Harold Prescott from Abbey Village winning loads of races every time we went to Blackburn and Peter Holmes who could really do a dog as good as any top trainer anywhere .

I can recall big named professional footballers attending the dogs. Everton and England International Alan Ball and Wyn Davies of Man City and Wales were often seen at Bolton. Ex Arsenal and Blackburn forward John Radford and Ray Hankin of Burnley and Leeds regularly attended the Blackburn track, along with Liverpool full back Alec Lindsay, who raced a Brindle dog called Big Deal with his brother at both Bolton and Blackburn.
