This is a very interesting article in the Greyhound Star re: on course bookmakers.
Now then one thing i would like to know is what ever happened to the 5/2 the field on our weekly BAGS race cards? Lack of dogs and poor grading. Simonβs bang on about needing bookmakers on track. Industry SPs open to exchange manipulation esp on a Sunday morning..... if they brought it in most would be restricted.

THE bookmakers i use paddy power mainly, they are the only ones having odds. hills only bet at parade time. paddy power makes FALSE FAVS that bare little resemblance to the odds shown sp. do i want them in charge of betting , no thanks? the trackside bookies add to the noise and bustle of a greyhound track[well they used to]and i think outside of the track layers do more harm than good. also off course firms have done no good to any racing i know of , they have saved some promoters, but the tracks still left would have survived anyway, gone are midweek meetings ,in favour of bags. ask anyone who owns a dog what they prefer promoters are now bone idle and want big firms offerings instead of having to promote any racing and having to make it pay.. Simon Walmsley seems a level headed individual. and i hope his type are not shoved out by the industry's overlords.for a move that results in less choice.and a choice i prefer. suppose if I'm doing cash i would like to remember who it is too.

Well you learn something every day I always thought the Belle Vue track-side bookmakers had to pay some sort of rent to stand at the track.
Many years ago our bookmakers use to sponsor races at the track i fully understand now why they won't cough up any more.
Here's hoping when things get back to normal our track-side bookmakers are still in attendance .. But i think we all know things sadly are never ever going to be the same again.
The track bookmakers still pay rent to stand at non-BAGS meetings. Arguably, at BAGS meetings, they effectively make a contribution to the track by standing without receiving payment for a service which many other tracks pay for. It looks to me like track bookmakers will no longer be required at BAGS meetings which effectively means that anyone attending such meetings will have to bet online. Given the attitude of the likes of BET365 and Paddy Power to punters winning, which I always thought was the sole objective of punting, then options for many punters will effectively be restricted to Betfair. Simon has made an excellent case to retain track bookmakers and a move away from said arrangements will, IMO, be a retrograde move. As for non-BAGS meetings, which in the case of Belle Vue is Saturday nights, they will only begin once the current lockdown is eased. Given that said meetings are classifieds as being on a par with bars and restaurants, its likely that this area of the economy will be towards the back of the queue when areas of lockdown come to be eased. Some folks like to look on the bright side particularly when it comes to the sport they are interested in but none of us ought to be ignoring the stark reality of where the country, indeed the world, is at the moment. It may be very many months before we see Saturday nights racing at the track and this surely will have implications for the track being able to maintain not just which bookmakers will be standing again but also which trainers will be able to operate with only two meetings a week.

Very good letter in the GS by Simon Walmsley.
In my opinion when we start racing again all be it behind closed doors i can see no reason why we won't be able to have at least 3 meetings a week during the day. Wednesday - Friday / Saturday - Sunday all all do able 'IF' ARC required them at the ZOO.
We have plenty of greyhounds and trainers to cover these meetings when we resume racing.
Open Racing in my eyes will be the last to return so here's hoping all tracks put on these Invitation Races which allow all greyhounds in the care of tracks trainers to be able to race in. The GBGB have already stated that the prize-money for such events have to be the same as each tracks top grade races.
Plus i think all tracks should think about inviting a few unattached open race trainers to become attached to allow them to run in these Invitation Events.
I'm hoping in the middle of May we at least get the go ahead to start trials and then by the end of May early June we are back up and running.
Nobody likes change but i think we are all going to have to take what we are given in the coming weeks/months ahead.
